Student jailed 34 years for using Twitter
•Jailed student Salma al-Shebab
A Saudi student at Leeds University, Salma al-Shebab, 34, who was said to be returning to the United kingdom for a holiday when she was arrested, has been sentenced to 34 years for using a Twitter account and for following and retweeting dissident activists.
The mother of two was accused of using Twitter to cause public unrest and destabilise civil and national security after she posted tweets calling for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia.
The Daily Mail reports that Al-Shebab, who has two young sons aged four and six, was earlier sentenced to six years in prison but a Saudi terrorism court, Monday, increased her jail term to 34 years after the activist appealed her sentence.
She is said to also be facing a 34-year travel ban upon the expiration of her jail term.
Al-Shebab was said to have been arrested in January 2021 while on holiday in Saudi Arabia just as she planned to return to the United Kingdom, where she was a PhD student at the University of Leeds.
It was gathered that in delivering the judgement, the court cited Al-Shebab’s social media activity where she tweeted in support of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia and expressed solidarity with imprisoned women right activists such as Loujain al-Hathloul, and subsequently called for their freedom.
She was said to have been arrested after she retweeted a post from Al-Hathloul’s sister, Lina.
The post read, “Freedom for Loujain Al-Hathloul … Freedom for all prisoners of conscience. Your freedom is my first wish for this New Year – Happy New Year.” the Daily Mail reported.
She was accused of ‘providing succour to those seeking to disrupt public order and undermine the safety of the general public and stability of the state, and publishing false and tendentious rumours on Twitter‘

China frees US pastor detained for 18 years
China has freed David Lin, a U.S. pastor who had been in jail since 2006, the State Department said Sunday, marking the release of a man who Washington claims was wrongfully detained.
U.S. politicians had for years urged Beijing to free Lin, who was jailed for life on charges of contract fraud.
“We welcome David Lin’s release from prison in the People’s Republic of China. He has returned to the United States and now gets to see his family for the first time in nearly 20 years,” said a State Department spokesperson.
Lin’s daughter Alice earlier told Politico that her 68-year-old father would be arriving in San Antonio, Texas.
“No words can express the joy we have – we have a lot of time to make up for,” Politico quoted her as saying.
Last November, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee urged President Joe Biden to use a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to push for the release of Lin and two other detainees – Kai Li and Mark Swidan.
Washington says the three were wrongfully detained. China says such cases are handled according to the law.
A congressional commission is due to hold a hearing next Wednesday on the case of American citizens imprisoned in China, in particular Lin, Li and Swidan, which it said had all faced health issues.

Trump safe after fresh gunshots at golf course, suspect in custody
Former President Donald Trump is safe following gunshots “in his vicinity”, his campaign said, after an incident took place near his Florida golf club on Sunday.
Secret Service agents saw a man pointing a rifle at the golf course where Trump was apparently located at the time, law enforcement sources told the BBC’s US partner CBS News.
Agents fired multiple times at the suspect, who tried to run away, the sources said, adding that a suspect is now in custody and a weapon has been recovered.
In an email to his supporters, Trump said he was “safe and well”.
“Nothing will slow me down,” he wrote. “I will never surrender!”
The incident comes almost exactly two months after a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, striking his ear.
The Secret Service confirmed in a post on X that they were investigating a “protective incident” involving Trump that took place shortly before 14:00 EST (19:00 BST) on Sunday.
The White House said President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris had been briefed about the incident that they said took place at the Trump International Golf Course, “where former President Trump was golfing”.
“They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” the White House said.
Harris posted on X that she had been briefed on the matter and was glad Trump was unharmed. “Violence has no place in America,” she wrote.
The BBC has contacted the US Secret Service, the West Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office and Trump campaign for more details.
Trump was injured while addressing a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, on 13 July when a gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired at him with an AR-15–style rifle from the roof of a nearby building.
The shooting left one audience member dead, while Crooks, 20, was killed at the scene by a Secret Service sniper.
The Secret Service faced intense scrutiny over how the shooter from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was able to open fire on the former president.
The director of the agency, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned within two weeks of the incident.

President injured in knife attack
Comoros President Azali Assoumani was slightly wounded in a knife attack Friday, the presidency said, adding that the attacker had been arrested.
“The President of the Republic Azali Assoumani was slightly wounded by a knife while attending the funeral” of a well-known religious leader, it said in a statement.
“His injuries are not serious, and he has returned home. The attacker is in the hands of the security services,” it added.
Government spokeswoman Fatima Ahamadael told AFP that the attack happened in Salimani-Itsandra, an area on the outskirts of the capital Moroni.
“Thank God, his life is not in danger,” she said, declining to give further details.
Witnesses told AFP that the attacker was a 22-year-old with no criminal history, who had joined the army in 2022. He was dressed in a boubou, and was in the room with the religious leader’s body, as mourners were paying respects, they said.
The knife injured the president’s hand, but the attacker was stopped by another mourner, the witnesses said.
A source close to the presidency, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “The president has received appropriate care. He is out of danger.”
A second source, also speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that the attacker was a young “active-duty gendarme”.
No other details were immediately available.
After the attack, the neighbourhood remained tense, with gendarmes on the scene. Residents hurried home, sometimes pausing to whisper in small groups on the streets.
Azali, 65, a former military ruler who came to power in a coup in 1999, was re-elected president in January after a disputed vote was followed by two days of deadly protests.
He has been accused of growing authoritarianism.
In August, he granted new powers to his son, in a move that critics said was a step towards consolidating the family’s rule over the small African island nation.
Nour El Fath Azali, who is Azali’s eldest son, was appointed secretary general of Comoros in July.
With his new powers, he must approve all decrees issued by ministers and governors.
Critics said that elevates his role to that of de facto prime minister.
In January, President Azali won a vote which his opponents said was marred by fraud. Court challenges to the election were dismissed.
One person was killed and several others injured in the violence that erupted in the aftermath of the election in the country of some 870,000 people.
His arch-rival, former president Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, is serving a life sentence for high treason for allegedly selling passports. (AFP)
