A dismissed Nigerian soldier, Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly known as Soja Boi (with the service number 18NA/77/1009 LCPL), serving with the 81 Division Task Force Battalion in Borno State, has alleged that personnel of the Nigerian Army purchase their uniforms and protective gear with personal funds despite earning modest salaries.

The former lance corporal, Olamilekan, a military content creator known for his humorous videos, made the claims in a yet-to-be-released interview on the Honest Brunch Podcast alongside human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

Speaking during the interview, he disclosed details of his earnings while in service, noting that his salary was recently increased.

“As a soldier, like presently now (Before he was dismissed in March), them dey pay me, the last salary wey I collect for army N109,000 or N111,000. But before that, it was just last year, February, that they increase the salary. Before now, N51,000,” he said.

He added that allowances brought the total to about N70,000 before the increment, but described survival on such income as extremely difficult.

“And how were you surviving on 71,000 Naira? The suffer, suffer no be small. Apart from the salary, nothing more. Nothing dey enter for you as a soldier,” he said.

Olamilekan further alleged that soldiers are responsible for purchasing their own uniforms, which he said are costly.

When Sowore asked, “What about uniform? Did they give you uniform?, Soja Boi replied, “No, they don’t give uniform now, soldier. Ask any soldier. They buy them,” he said.

Providing cost estimates, he noted that uniforms and boots often exceed a soldier’s monthly salary.

“The uniform is about N55,000. Yes. Now you go buy uniform, now you go buy boots, now you go buy anything you want to use. The boots, sometimes N60,000 for one pair of boots,” he said.

He also claimed that essential protective gear, such as bulletproof vests and helmets, is not provided, except in rare situations.

Sowore also asked,”What about armour bullet proof, helmet… all those ones, they don’t give you. So you buy it yourself?”

He replied,” I swear, nobody will give you. ” he said.

According to him, such equipment is only made available during special visits by high-ranking officials.

“If you see say maybe soldier wear that thing, maybe say they get one kind, or this big visitor, maybe governor, they want to go on occasion… they just go pack one and come,” he said.

He added that soldiers often operate in high-risk environments like Sambisa without adequate protection.

” Nobody will give you now if you no buy am… If anything they happen, now una he go first meet without bulletproof. Who won give you now?” he said.

Olamilekan also recounted his deployment experience in Maiduguri, stating that he spent over four years in the conflict zone despite standard rotation timelines.

“So that Maiduguri, I don spend about four years, nine months now, and they tell us, yes, now two years before they will rotate you. Me, I don do double, I don do the third,” he said.

The dismissed soldier had earlier gone viral in February 2026 after releasing a video criticising the treatment of soldiers and calling on political leaders to send their children to the war front.

In the video, he challenged political officeholders to experience military service firsthand.

“In this country, we have 36 governors, we have senators, we have ministers. Let each one of them bring their son to join the Nigerian Army. May they join the Nigerian Army, not even the officer, may they join the other rank,” he said.

He added that such exposure would help them understand the realities faced by soldiers.

“So that they can come and witness what we, what we dey witness… every day, this killing is too much,” he said.

According to his management, Olamilekan was arrested about eight weeks ago, following the video and spent his birthday in detention before being released, sparking the #FreeSojaBoi campaign on social media.

Confirming his release in a post on Instagram on March 2026 , he expressed appreciation to supporters.

“We are grateful to everyone who stood up, spoke out, and used their platforms to demand fairness. Your voices were heard,” he wrote.

“To friends, family, fans, and supporters across different platforms, thank you for your unwavering support during this difficult time. Your reposts, tags, messages, and concern meant everything. You showed that unity and collective voice still matter,” he added.

He also claimed that his dismissal from service was linked to his earlier video.

“I was arrested and dismissed as a Nigerian soldier because of a video I made last year, where I called on politicians’ children to join the military,” he said.

Before his dismissal, Olamilekan had built a strong online presence, often appearing in military attire while creating comedic and lifestyle content.
He also runs a clothing brand, Giran Wears, which focuses on customised streetwear.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anaele, said she would address the viral claims made by the former officer in an official statement.Anaele neither confirmed nor denied the allegation.

“I’ll get back to you with a formal statement. You have to wait,” she said.

Zamfara residents abandon 30 villages over withdrawal of troops

Panic has swept through parts of Zamfara State following the withdrawal of security troops from Lilo village in Mada district of Gusau Local Government Area, forcing more than 30 surrounding communities to abandon their homes in search of safety.

Residents said the mass exodus began after troops, who had been stationed in the area for over seven years, were suddenly evacuated late at night, leaving communities vulnerable to renewed bandit attacks.

A resident of Lilo, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said fear spread quickly after the departure of the security personnel.

“We fled because we are afraid of imminent attacks by bandits. The troops have been our only protection,” he said.

According to him, the soldiers were first deployed to the village in June 2019 by former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, shortly after he assumed office.

“The troops stayed here for over seven years. There were more than 60 personnel from different security agencies. Their presence kept us safe,” he added.

He revealed that the troops were withdrawn around 10 p.m., with two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and a Toyota Hilux used to evacuate them.

“One of the security officers told me they were pulled out due to fears of ambush, especially as the rainy season begins. The river around the village makes access difficult, and reinforcement is nearly impossible,” he explained.

He recalled that during the previous rainy season, troops in the area were ambushed, resulting in the deaths of six personnel after reinforcements failed to arrive on time due to poor road conditions.

The resident further disclosed that over 30 communities across the Mada axis—stretching from Lilo to Gusami Gora and up to Birnin Magaji—had previously relocated to Lilo for safety, relying on the military presence for protection.

“We are surrounded by bandit camps. Some are less than three kilometres from this village, and some even occupy our farmlands,” he said.

He added that the relationship between residents and the troops had been cordial, with communities providing daily support to the personnel.

“We supported them with food, firewood, water, and even farmland. We cultivated and harvested crops for them. During festive periods, we contributed to provide animals for celebrations,” he said.

He stressed that the collaboration between residents and security forces had ensured relative peace in the area for years.

“For over seven years, there were no informants or bandit collaborators here. That is why we are now at risk—they see us as enemies for refusing to cooperate with them,” he said.

The source warned that remaining in the village without security protection could be disastrous.

“If the bandits attack, they will burn people alive and destroy the entire village. That is why we have no choice but to leave,” he said.

He also revealed that displaced residents were heading toward Gusau, the state capital, despite efforts by authorities to redirect them to nearby Keita or Kwatarkwashi.

“The district head insists we must reach the capital so the government can respond quickly to our situation,” he said.

When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the development.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the Commissioner of Police, A.M. Bello, had taken swift action.

“We immediately deployed a police tactical team with support from two Armoured Personnel Carriers to the area,” he said.

He added that normalcy had been restored following the intervention.

“With the presence of our personnel, calm has returned to the area,” Abubakar stated. (Daily Trust)

EFCC chairman raises the alarm over cybercrime epidemic

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has raised concern that about six in every 10 university students in Nigeria are involved in cybercrime.

He made the remark on Tuesday at the opening of the 8th biennial conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria (COPSUN), held in Kano.

The theme of the event was “Unlocking the potentials of artificial intelligence: University governance, internationalisation and rankings.”

“My research in the last one year has shown that about six out of 10 students in our universities are into cybercrime. It is a very disturbing situation,” he said.

He blamed the trend on what he described as deep-seated structural problems within the university system, including weak oversight and poor accountability mechanisms.

According to Daily Trust, the EFCC boss also disclosed that many of those arrested in recent cybercrime operations were students, some of whom allegedly placed lecturers on payroll, thereby undermining academic integrity.

He further noted that a significant number of the 792 suspected cyber fraudsters arrested in Lagos in December 2024 were students, adding that the operation exposed the scale of cybercrime networks operating in the country.

Olukoyede also expressed concern over the rise of “Yahoo Plus”, where internet fraud is allegedly combined with fetish practices.

He called on university authorities to strengthen institutional controls and deepen cooperation with law enforcement agencies to address the problem.

“A university that lacks financial accountability cannot credibly train future professionals. The integrity of our universities is a matter of national security,” he said.

The EFCC chairman also advocated the use of artificial intelligence in fraud detection, payroll management, procurement monitoring and academic integrity.

He said AI tools could help flag suspicious transactions, detect irregular salary payments and enhance real-time auditing processes.

Olukoyede added that the EFCC had already begun deploying AI in its investigations, including digital forensics and financial tracking.
