Ahead of the planned nationwide protest slated to start August 1, police authorities are requesting the details of the demonstrators.

While briefing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, specifically asked all groups planning to participate in the demonstrations to submit their details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.

The reason he gave was that the protest was peaceful.

“We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest,” the police boss said.

“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.

“To facilitate a successful and incident-free protest, they should please provide the following information: state the proposed protest routes and assembly points; expected duration of the protest; and names and contact details of protest leaders and organisers.”

The IG added that the information expected from the organisers also includes measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements, as well as key identifiers for possible isolation of potential troublemakers.

Hijacking

Worried by the possibility of the protest being hijacked by criminal elements, the IGP explained that the police authorities needed the necessary information to also identify potential troublemakers.

He reiterated the police’s determination to deploy adequate personnel and resources to ensure public safety, saying the Force needs to know the specific routes and areas for the protest to avoid conflicts with other events or activities.

The IGP also released other guidelines to the protesters, among which were for them to “establish clear communication channels with protest leaders to address any concerns or issues that may arise; minimise the risk of violence, property damage, or other criminal activity.

“We encourage all protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly to guarantee a safe and successful exercise of their rights.”

No Love For Nigeria

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu weighed in on the planned nationwide protests, saying that sponsors of the demonstrations do not love the country.

Though he did not identify any sponsor, he said those championing the cause of the protests have alternative passports and hold meetings virtually across the world.

“The sponsors of protests do not love our country. They have no love for the nation. They do not understand citizenship. They have alternative passports,” Tinubu spoke at the Presidential Villa while receiving a delegation of Islamic leaders led by Sheikh Bala Lau.

“They are in different parts of the world holding meetings virtually. We do not want to turn Nigeria into Sudan. We are talking about hunger, not burials. We have to be careful. We should be careful with premature politics; politics of hate, and anger.

“The internet has made it possible to hold meetings in artificial settings. They hold meetings and sponsor anger,” the President was quoted as saying in a statement by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale.

President Tinubu argued that protests, fuelled by anger and hate, could degenerate into violence and set the country backward.

Regime Change

Earlier, security agencies warned against planned demonstrations, asking Nigerians to shelve actions capable of undermining national security.

Leading the agencies is the Department of State Services (DSS) which issued a statement on Thursday, saying it had identified the sponsors.

Though the agency agreed on the citizens’ right to protest, it claimed that some elements planned to hijack it.

“The plotters desire to use the intended violent outcome to smear the federal and sub-national governments; make them unpopular and pit them against the masses,” it said in a statement by its spokesman Peter Afunanya. “The long-term objective is to achieve a regime change, especially at the Centre.”

Calls for the demonstration tagged #EndBadGovernance protest had garnered momentum on social media in the wake of the high cost of living in Nigeria triggered by the twin policies of fuel subsidy removal and the floating of the naira.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the inflation figures have reached 34 percent, pushing the cost of essential commodities beyond the reach of millions of Nigerians.

President Tinubu has been meeting with stakeholders including traditional rulers as part of last-gasp efforts to prevent the protest. He is calling on the organisers to be patient with his government as it works to address Nigeria’s challenges, assuring that reforms by his administration will pay off in the long run. (Channels TV)

Suspected bandits have allegedly kidnapped 18 students from Oyo State travelling from Sokoto State to their hometowns in Oke-Ogun, after attacking their chartered bus and killing the driver, sources familiar with the incident have said.

The students, who were travelling from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, were reportedly intercepted by the assailants along the route to Oyo State within the past 48 hours.

The abductors were said to have moved the victims towards the Mokwa axis.

The development has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students travelling between states, particularly along routes where commuters have repeatedly faced attacks and abductions.

An Oke-Ogun youth leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, clarifying that the victims were students of Gamji College of Health Technology and not Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as earlier reported.

“Sadly, the unfortunate incident is being confirmed by me because I’m from Oke-Ogun too, and our people have confirmed that it truly happened in the past 48 hours,” the youth leader said.

He explained that the students were travelling in a chartered bus from their institution in Sokoto to Oke-Ogun, with Igboho as their specific destination.

“But it wasn’t a bus conveying UDUS students. It was a bus taking students from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, to Oke-Ogun, Igboho to be precise,” he said.

According to him, the attackers killed the driver before taking the students away.

“The driver was killed and all the students were kidnapped. They have reached the Mokwa side,” he said.

The youth leader further disclosed that the driver’s remains had been buried.

“The driver was killed at the scene and his remains were buried on Saturday,” he said.

Other sources familiar with the incident said the number of abducted students could be as many as 18.

The sources said the students were travelling in a chartered bus arranged by their school to convey them to their respective hometowns in Oyo State when the vehicle was intercepted by the assailants.

They were reportedly taken away by the attackers after the driver was killed.

The latest incident comes barely days after 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members were reportedly abducted by gunmen in Imo State.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen reportedly attacked their two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

Efforts to obtain further information from the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, proved abortive, as he had not responded to messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

An aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, with 32 people — 25 passengers and seven crew members — reportedly on board.

The aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday.

A community leader had confirmed the crash, but said residents were yet to establish the exact location and other details.

He said: “Yes, it is true. A helicopter crashed at Igbokoda, Ondo State. But we don’t know the exact place and other details.”

However, NAF confirmed the incident on Monday in a statement, saying it had activated an immediate search-and-rescue operation following the crash involving an ATR-42 aircraft.

The aircraft was said to have been on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.

In a statement by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF said: “The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.

“Search and rescue operations, in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies, are currently ongoing.

“The NAF is committed to ensuring the success of the ongoing search and rescue efforts. Further details will be communicated in due course.”

Aviation Ministry

Also confirming the crash, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, disappeared after air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m.

Keyamo said the aircraft was en route to Lagos from Benin when all efforts to raise it on radio proved unsuccessful.

He said subsequent information confirmed that the aircraft had crashed close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda and that the wreckage had been located.

“Preliminary information suggests that there were 25 passengers and 7 crew members on board,” Keyamo said.

The minister did not provide further details on the condition or identities of those on board, as search and rescue operations were still ongoing.

Keyamo noted that the control and regulation of military aircraft were outside the authority of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

He, however, said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation and assistance in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

“Further information on this unfortunate incident will be made available subsequently,” he said.
