Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah has assured the youths of Enugu State of socioeconomic empowerment and digital revolution and an enabling environment where they could discover their hidden talents and compete creatively within the emerging global order.

Mbah, who said he was deliberate in not only ensuring that the youth were represented in his cabinet, but also in entrusting them with significant responsibilities, noted the youth were at the core of his governance philosophy, assuring that the government would provide world class facilities for human capital development that would turn them into highly productive assets.

He made the commitments in a goodwill message to Enugu youths on the occasion of the 2023 International Youth Day on Saturday themed “Green Skills for the Youth: Towards a Sustainable World”.

“We are very much determined to help the youths to develop the knowledge and technical skills needed for the effective use of green technologies.

“Our administration priotises the development of our youths to easily fit into and also reap bountifully from the world of robotic science, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, mechatronics, e-commerce and Fintech.

“We want to transform our youths from job seekers to wealth creators and employment generators. We are still very much committed to building a tier-4 hyper scale cloud neutral data centre and incubation centres with high speed internet, unlimited access to data, uninterrupted power supply, and workstations to enable them to operate in the cybernetics space.

“We have prioritised science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education as well as technical and vocational training centres to impart new skills in the youths in order to meet up with the demands of investors in the state”.

Governor Mbah commended the youths of Enugu for supporting the ban on sit-at-home by the administration, saying the statement would continue to build on the improved security experienced in the state since the ban and consequent war on insecurity and criminals across the state.

“I want to commend you most sincerely on behalf of the government and good people of Enugu State for your support towards the ban on sit-at-home. You came out en masse. You marched the streets and we heard you clearly.

“I can assure you that there is no going back on the improved security in Enugu State. it can only get better, as we have no space to share with criminals. And with the improved security, you can only rest assured of the influx of investors, who would provide the needed private-sector backbone to transform our state and generate employment and opportunities for the youth”, Mbah concluded.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 38 foreign nationals in Epe, Lagos State, following intelligence reports about the presence of a large number of foreigners occupying a building in the area.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, disclosed that the operation was launched after credible intelligence indicated suspicious activities involving the occupants of the building.

He clarified that the arrested foreigners were not connected to individuals featured in a recent viral video that sparked public concern.

According to the police commissioner, those arrested include 14 Chinese nationals, nine Cameroonians, four Beninese, four Malaysians, two Togolese and one Ghanaian.

Tijani said preliminary investigations raised concerns as many of the suspects were unable to provide satisfactory explanations regarding their activities in Nigeria.

“We got information that there were lots of foreign nationals occupying a particular building. We went into action and arrested 14 Chinese nationals, nine Cameroonians, four Beninese, four Malaysians, two Togolese and one Ghanaian,” he said.

He added that some of the suspects claimed to be involved in networking businesses but could not adequately explain the nature of their operations.

“What’s important is that all these people that were arrested could not give satisfactory accounts of themselves. They could not specifically tell us what they were doing in Nigeria. Some claimed they were into networking, but they could not explain exactly what that meant,” the CP stated.

The police commissioner disclosed that the suspects are currently being profiled to determine whether they are linked to any criminal activities before being handed over to the appropriate authorities.

Preliminary findings, according to him, revealed that 20 of the arrested foreigners entered Nigeria illegally, while 18 possessed valid ECOWAS travel documents.

He said the matter has been referred to the Nigeria Immigration Service and the embassies of the affected countries for further investigation and necessary action.

Tijani also highlighted other operational successes recorded by the command in June, including arrests linked to armed robbery, cultism, unlawful possession of firearms, vandalism, conspiracy and other violent crimes.

He disclosed that the operations led to the recovery of 14 firearms, four live cartridges, 51 mobile phones, two Vehicle Engine Control Units (ECUs), popularly known as brain boxes, vandalised electrical cables, knives and other incriminating items.

The commissioner described the achievements as evidence of the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies adopted by the command.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to protecting lives and property and ensuring that criminal elements have no safe haven in the state.

“The Command wishes to reassure all residents of Lagos State that there will be no safe haven for criminal elements within the State. We therefore urge members of the public to continue partnering with the Police by providing timely, useful and credible information capable of supporting crime prevention, prompt operational response and effective law enforcement,” he said.

ADC: Bayo Onanuga’s ‘No Hunger’ comments reflect Tinubu’s disconnection from reality

Senator David Mark, ADC National Chairman
Spread the love

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Tinubu administration of grave insensitivity, following comments by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga that he does not see the level of hunger and hardship being reported across the country.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said Onanuga’s views reflect the dominant thinking in the Tinubu-led government, which it said confirms its long-standing position that the administration is disconnected from the reality faced by millions of ordinary Nigerians.

The full statement read:

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned recent comments by Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, claiming that he does not see the level of hunger and hardship Nigerians are talking about. Those comments are not merely insensitive; they are a startling admission of how disconnected the APC government has become from the realities of the people it governs. When over 80% of Nigerians are struggling to feed their families, pay school fees, afford transportation and keep their businesses alive, it is extraordinary that a senior presidential spokesman can publicly suggest that the hardship is somehow overstated or even contrived.

The truth is that Nigerians are not faking their suffering. The unprecedented cost-of-living crisis confronting the country today is the direct result of the ill-conceived and poorly executed economic policies of the Tinubu administration, which have thrown millions more into acute poverty since this government came to power. Food prices have soared, transportation costs have multiplied, the value of incomes and savings has been eroded, and millions of Nigerians who were managing before are now trapped in economic distress. This is not opposition propaganda. It is the daily lived experience of ordinary Nigerians in every state of the federation.

What makes Mr. Onanuga’s comments particularly troubling is that they reveal a government that has become tragically insular and could no longer do anything differently. A sensible government does not measure the effects of its policies by merely looking at the people within its immediate circle or driving through paved roads. It must listen to the people in the markets, on the farms, in the classrooms, in the workshops and in the streets. If the Presidency genuinely cannot see the hunger and hardship that Nigerians are talking about, then it raises serious questions about whether it sees the people at all.

The APC government will undoubtedly point to roads infrastructure projects as its achievements. While even this is debatable, the fact remains that Nigerians cannot eat roads. The first responsibility of any government is to create economic conditions in which citizens can afford food, find jobs, run businesses and live with dignity. On this most fundamental test, the Tinubu administration has failed. After three years of promises, excuses and appeals for patience, the reality for 62% of Nigerians is that life is harder today than it was when this government took office.

The ADC believes that leadership begins with honesty. The question is no longer whether Nigerians are suffering; Nigerians already know that they are. The real question is whether this government is prepared to acknowledge the consequences of its policies and accept responsibility for its historic failures. Until it does, comments such as those made by Mr. Onanuga will only reinforce the growing perception that the APC government is out of touch with the people and unwilling to confront the damage its economic policies have inflicted on ordinary Nigerians.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

Infantino revealed that he and Trump will watch the showpiece event together and jointly present the World Cup trophy to the winning team after the final.

The FIFA chief highlighted his close working relationship with the American president, stating that they have collaborated closely throughout his current tenure.

According to Infantino, hosting the expanded 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico would have been significantly more difficult without Trump’s involvement and support.

“We will be together with the president [Trump] enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together,” Infantino told Fox & Friends.

“We are together all the time.”

The decision comes after controversy surrounding the trophy presentation at the FIFA Club World Cup final, when Trump joined players of Chelsea on stage following their victory over Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey.

Trump had been invited to present the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, but drew attention after remaining on stage during the team’s celebrations.

While recent World Cup trophies have traditionally been presented by FIFA presidents, including Infantino and former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter, heads of state have also played a role in trophy presentations at various tournaments throughout the competition’s history.
