Ekweremadu: Invoke Royal Prerogative of Mercy – Enugu lawyer, Eya tells King Charles
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Mr Chinedu Eya, has sent a strongly-worded letter to King Charles III for the release of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, a former Deputy Senate President.
Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice and a Medical Doctor, Obinna Obeta, bagged different jail terms on Friday last week in the United Kingdom (UK) after being convicted of organ harvesting.
Eya has now written a letter to the newly crowned King Charles III, begging him to use his Prerogative of Mercy and set the Ekweremadus and the doctor free.
A copy of the letter obtained by The Advocate on Monday in Enugu titled: “Appeal for Your Gracious and Merciful Invocation of the Royal Prerogative of Mercy For Ike Ekweremadu and wife, Beatrice over their conviction by a British Court’,” pleaded for leniency for the convicts.
Eya wrote: “I wish to start this letter by congratulating Your Majesty on your coronation a few days ago, in the United Kingdom.
“Having said that, it is equally important to inform you that your coronation is coming on the heels of the sentencing of my dearest brother and Nigerian former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife and doctor, Obinna Obeta to 9 years, 4 years and 10 years, respectively, in prison by an Old Bailey Court for violating British laws on kidney donation and transplant.

“The court’s action became so devastating to many of us in Enugu State and Nigerian in general because the lawmaker only got enmeshed in the whole controversy as a parent who was only desirous to save the life of his daughter, Sonia.
“Sonia, who is Ekweremadu’s daughter, as I make this appeal, is still writhing in pain and living on daily medication (dialysis) in a bid to survive her debilitating health challenge which has eventually led to her parents’ conviction.
“The young lady was in dire need of a kidney transplant; unfortunately, her parents and their doctor went about the mission in the most unacceptable ways.
“Already, Ekweremadu and his wife have been convicted and sentenced accordingly.
“I write to seek for your gracious and merciful invocation of the Royal Prerogative of Mercy for Ike Ekweremadu and wife, Beatrice over their conviction by the British court.
“Senator Ekweremadu, before his conviction, was a priceless resource in Nigeria and Africa in general.
“He had served our federation as Deputy Senate President, as well as functioned as Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, where he contributed immeasurably to the development and stability of our democracy; hence the above appeal.”

UK PM Keir Starmer resigns
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday after less than two years in office, in a term characterised by policy U-turns and deep public unpopularity.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said as he choked up in an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street.
Starmer said the process of picking a new leader for the centre-left party would be launched in July, and he would remain as prime minister until his successor is chosen, to be in place before parliament returns from the summer recess in September.
Starmer’s main rival, veteran politician Andy Burnham, is due to be sworn in as a member of parliament on Monday after winning a crucial special election on Thursday, allowing him to return to parliament and clearing his path to run for party leader.
“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” Starmer added.
Until the weekend, Starmer had insisted he was going to fight on and remain as prime minister as he fought off challenges and calls to step down.

He has clung to that position for months after multiple scandals and high-profile resignations that piled the pressure on him and his Labour Party.
But Britain is now set to get its seventh prime minister in a decade.
Starmer’s widely anticipated announcement comes a day before the 10-year anniversary of the Brexit referendum, which triggered the UK’s exit from the European Union and an unprecedented churn of prime ministers.
Starmer has been credited with reshaping Labour into an election-winning party, which clinched a decisive victory in 2024, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
But his term was derailed by missteps ranging from benefit cuts to criticism over defence spending plans.
He was nearly ousted in March over his ill-fated decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, a known associate of the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as the UK’s ambassador to Washington.
He has also struggled to fight off the rapid rise of the far-right, anti-immigration Reform UK party — which defeated Labour in local elections in May, further weakening Starmer’s position.
“I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support, knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago,” Starmer said in his resignation speech.

Enugu Senatorial By-election: Asogwa’s landslide victory affirms APC’s dominance, Says Gov Mbah
…Describes Asogwa as people’s champion
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has congratulated the winner and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday by-election for Enugu North Senatorial District, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, describing the landslide victory as an affirmation of APC’s overwhelming acceptance and dominance in the state’s politics.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday, declared APC’s Asogwa winner of the senatorial seat formerly won in 2023 by Labour Party Senator Okey Ezea, who died after an illness in November 2025.
The district covers Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, and Udenu Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The Returning Officer, Professor Christian Ezeibe, who announced the result in the early hours of Sunday at the INEC office in the LGA, said Asogwa polled a total of 162,360 votes to defeat his closest rival, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 9,299 votes.
Reacting, Mbah described it as a “statement victory,” noting that the people of the senatorial district had not only made the best choice for quality representation, but had also demonstrated total alignment with the APC.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Enugu State, I congratulate Chief Ikeje Asogwa on this resounding victory.

“It is a statement and landmark victory both for us as an administration and for the APC as a party.
“If anybody was in doubt, the landslide victory proves, beyond rhetoric, that APC has now emerged as the unquestionable dominant political force across the length and breadth of our state. Our people are fully aligned.
“It is also a vote of confidence in Chief Ikeje Asogwa, a people’s champion, who has distinguished himself in the service of his people and the state.
“There is no doubt that his presence at the centre will strengthen state-federal government partnership and the inflow of dividends of democracy,” he stated.
