The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disowned a letter circulating on social media and other online platforms, purportedly issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, to the Foreign Minister of Liberia.
The ministry described the document as fake, unauthorised and not originating from any official channel of the Federal Government, warning that it was designed to mislead the public and create unnecessary diplomatic tension between Nigeria and Liberia.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the ministry said the letter allegedly addressed to the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Liberia concerning comments attributed to a Nigerian religious leader did not emanate from the ministry.
“The Ministry wishes to categorically state that the said letter is fake, unauthorised, and did not emanate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any official channel of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, a preliminary review of the document revealed several inconsistencies with established diplomatic communication procedures and official correspondence protocols.
It said the purported correspondence should be regarded as a fabrication intended to mislead the public and undermine relations between two friendly countries.

The ministry urged members of the public, media organisations and other stakeholders to disregard the letter and avoid sharing unverified documents capable of spreading misinformation.
It added that relevant authorities had been alerted and security agencies were already investigating the source of the document with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to transparency, professionalism and responsible diplomatic engagement, while assuring the government and people of Liberia of the country’s continued friendship and goodwill.
