Politics is Tropical: Hon. Sunday Umeha, a trail blazer , resilient in face of adversity
By Nnamdi Roosevelt Anigbo
In the ever-evolving political landscape , especially at the Local level, it is not uncommon for challenges to arise for those in positions of power, especially when representing the interests of the people.
Sunday Umeha, is a dedicated member of the House of Representatives for Udi and Ezeagu Federal Constituency. He recently came under fire from various quarters, with critics attempting to think for him, also acting the spectator that knows best angle to score a goal in the midst of play. Casting aspertions and conclusions all geared towards undermining his accomplishments and dedication to his constituents. However, a closer examination reveals a storyline that may anger his detractors:
Umeha has remained resilient and has made remarkable achievements despite the significant odds stacked against him. Umeha was the only Labour Candidate standing in Enugu West. As a good Party person he Shouldered the pressures of five local government areas even as the Party is in shambles, he made himself a rallying point.
Sunday Umeha in all his private and public speeches has always extolled and ascribed his emergence to the House of Representatives to the people of Udi/Ezeagu. It will be preposterous for someone to generalise his twisted personal opinion to the people of Ezeagu and Udi. His ability to outshine some of his predecessors who held office for eight long years in less than two years, speaks volumes about his determination and effectiveness.
Umeha’s approach has been characterized by an unwavering commitment to serving the needs of his constituents, deploying innovative strategies to address their concerns. Unlike his predecessors, whose legacies may have been mired in stagnation ,political rhetoric and grandstanding, Umeha has adopted a proactive stance, championing policies that resonate with the everyday realities faced by the people.
‘Politics is Tropical’
Let me pause a little : May i in few lines pencil down in all honesty and transparency; what i mean by saying *Politics is Tropical.* One would ask what is *TROPISM* . In simple words. Tropism is curvature or oriental despotism.( Oriental Command , my Father would say)
Mankind curving to a better side is a constant variable. This despotic command is prevalent in Politics. So it takes a smart politician to identify an oriental command and take a corresponding response to that stimulus.
Umehaa did not go to Abuja to Galvant or for his personal gains notwithstanding. The HOR is a place for serious business , shopping, lobbing, fighting to grab/ purchase projects, funds and interventions; is the order of the day. If you are not smartly aligned to the system and the powers that be , you wont have anything to give to your constituents. Umeha did not go to Abuja to do Party Politics , he is there to bring projects and better the lots of Ndi Udi and Ezeagu. It will be infantile for a mere political toddler to understand or decipher hgh intrigues and manourvers of political gladiators from every part of the Country , where Umeha holds sway.
It will also be petty and quite demeaning for one to mudsling or throw tantrums on the person of SCAV Umeha, refering him as hungry? A very young progressive, vibrant and intelligent Lawyer who has won so many many controversial cases up to Supreme Court, challenging the political status quo at a time. A little lecture, its only in Nigeria that individuals finance and prosecute elections because of so many corrupt deep pockets.
That people supported Umeha does not make him Hungry, even Donald Trump as the richest American President ever and Obama, was supported financially by individuals. So it explains very low level of Political exposure and lack of indept knowledge of Political structures for someone to bring up “Sponsorship” in such a derogatory manner.

Let me not suffocate you, my audience with my superlative pencilings of Umeha’s persona.
Let me tell you what he has done so far for Udi Ezeagu in less than 2 years.
Some of the projects executed by Umeha that I know ( there are numerous others the Umeha has chosen to remain unannounced and some i don’t know) include :
1. Installation of solar street lights in almost all the churches in Ezeagu/Udi
2. Installation of solar street lights in some communities of Ezeagu/Udi
3. Construction of 6 classroom blocks at Imezi Olo
4 . Construction of solar powered boreholes in Nsude
5. Construction of solar powered boreholes in Umuase Ngwo
6. Construction of solar powered boreholes in Udi town (ongoing)
7. Construction of solar powered boreholes in Obioma (ongoing)
8. Renovation of classroom blocks at Amansiodo oghe (ongoing)
9. Training of 250 constituents on agriculture biotechnology
10. Payments of jamb forms for over 350 students
11. Grading of some rural access roads
12. Distribution of fertilisers to some farmers in Ezeagu/Udi
13. Provision of seedlings to some farmers Ezeagu/Udi
15. Payment of Jamb and waec fees for Student in Udi /Ezeagu.
16. Award of Scholarship to Smart but indigent students in his constituency.
All these and more are coming. Before Umeha’s completion of his 4yr tenure, It will be 40/40 for all the wards in Udi and Ezeagu, first of its kind. This is the Vision for Udi and Ezeagu and its attainable. All these projects are verifiable. GO AND VERIFY.
Umeha’s gratitude to his Friends, stakeholders and supporters is overwhelmingly boundless, but no one should cry fowl yet. It will be too early to adjudge SCAV Umeha, There is a difference between FAST FOOD and REAL FOOD. Our people have all these years been fed with Fast Food but Umeha has come to change that status quo, Umeha’s appreciation to his people, men, women , friends and stakeholders will be grandiose despite the Project for the general communities, one never seen in Udi and Ezeagu.
Umehaa has been a Loyalist, a good follower and smart one too. He has great respect for Okwute Ndi Igbo H.E Peter Obi and how he has and is making Ndi Igbo proud in all facets and political fora. Obi also has built a solid reference point for himself as former Governor of Anambra State, ( from APGA, PDP and LP , who knows the next party), which he will always say “GO AND VERIFY”. In fact Umeha is following Peter Obi’s foot steps.
It is in this same spirit that Umeha is navigating political opportunities to put formidable and laudable projects on ground for his people of Udi and Ezeagu, to also have a reference point, where he must have finished his tenure as HMR Udi and Ezeagu. he will say “GO AND VERIFY”
Umeha is building his own political career and future. Umeha’s vision is 40/40 so every one can verify at the end of his tenure.
If by any means Umeha fails to do same for his people, it is these same people judging Umeha too early that will cast assertions on him.
So please lets allow Umeha do anything he can to better the lots of Ndi Udi and Ezeagu. Even if it entails changing to a party that fulfills his desired ambition.
Umeha’s Legislative Impact within this short period of time has been notable for several key initiatives aimed at improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure in the Udi and Ezeagu constituencies. His ability to collaborate across party lines has enabled him to secure funding and support for projects that directly benefit his constituents at the green chambers. In contrast to the criticisms leveled against him, Umeha’s track record suggests a politician who prioritizes the well-being of the people above all else, despite the challenges presented by a political system that often favors the establishment.
It is essential to recognize the skill with which Umeha navigates a politically hostile environment. His critics may aim to paint him as ineffective or misaligned with the needs of his constituents, but these narratives often fail to hold water, under scrutiny. The aggressive attacks serve as a testament to his impact; it is a tried-and-true strategy to discredit Umeha because he poses a genuine threat to the status quo.
As he continues to build on his successes, it becomes clear that Hon. Sunday Umeha is not merely surviving in a tough political climate—he is thriving. The challenges he faces only seem to fuel his passion and commitment to his role. Rather than buckle under pressure, Umeha’s resilience serves as an inspiration for many aspiring leaders, showcasing the power of perseverance and dedication in public service.
In a world where political narratives are so often driven by animosity and division, Hon. Sunday Umeha represents a refreshing alternative—a leader who embraces the call of duty against all odds. As he forges ahead, it will be crucial for his constituents to support his efforts and recognize that his achievements are not just personal victories, but milestones that reflect their collective aspirations.
In an age where strong leadership is desperately needed, Umeha stands as a beacon of hope for Udi and Ezeagu, embodying the change that so many wish to see.
While the opposition may persist in their attacks, it remains evident that Hon. Umeha’s journey is just beginning. His legacy will be defined not by his detractors, but by the tangible impacts he leaves on the lives of the people of Udi and Ezeagu.
impacts that can only be achieved through resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Udi and Ezeagu

Ex-Gov Ugwuanyi reaffirms support for APC’s Ikeje Asogwa, disowns PDP candidate
Former Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that he is supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Barr. Nestor Ezeme, in the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election.
In a statement personally signed by him, Ugwuanyi described the claim as fake news orchestrated by political mischief makers seeking to gain undue advantage ahead of the poll scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The former governor, who is now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stated that he has no reason to support a candidate from another political party, stressing that his loyalty remains with the APC and all its candidates.
“As a committed member of the APC, I have no business supporting the candidate of another party. My support is firmly and unequivocally for all APC candidates, from the President down to the Councillor,” Ugwuanyi stated.
He specifically reaffirmed his support for the APC candidate in the Enugu North Senatorial bye-election, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, noting that his position on the contest has never been in doubt.
“I stand by Chief Ikeje Asogwa and my party, the APC. Any claim to the contrary is fake news and should be dismissed and disregarded by the public,” he said.

Ugwuanyi further alleged that the rumours were being spread by individuals bent on deceiving the electorate through name-dropping and misinformation.
“These false reports are the handiwork of mischief makers who have resorted to propaganda and deception in pursuit of electoral gains. The people should not be misled,” he added.
The former governor therefore urged members of the public and supporters across the Enugu North Senatorial District to disregard the reports and remain focused on the issues ahead of the election.

Kenneth Okonkwo dumps Atiku over appointment of VP candidate from South-South

Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has withdrawn his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following the announcement of former Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, as his vice presidential running mate.
Okonkwo made his position known in a statement issued on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, shortly after reports emerged that Atiku had selected Amaechi as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
The former Labour Party chieftain said he could not, in good conscience, campaign for any presidential ticket that excludes the South-East from both the presidential and vice-presidential positions.
“If it is confirmed that he has chosen a candidate from the South-South, I wish him well. I am not favourably disposed to campaigning for any presidential ticket that does not have a person of South-East origin as President or Vice in 2027,” Okonkwo stated.
His remarks effectively distance him from Atiku’s campaign and signal a major crack within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Okonkwo argued that the South-East has remained politically disadvantaged since the return of democracy in 1999, noting that the region has neither produced a President nor a Vice President during the period.

“This Geo-Political Zone has neither produced a President or Vice President since 1999. To deny the South-East the opportunity to produce the President or Vice President in ADC in 2027 will amount to perpetuating the marginalisation,” he said.
The lawyer and political activist expressed disappointment over reports that the vice-presidential slot may have been ceded to the South-South despite the sacrifices made by leaders from the South-East in building and sustaining the coalition.
“I heard from the social media that ADC has picked its vice presidential candidate from the South-South. If this is true, it is unfortunate, as this will continue the crude marginalisation of the South-East,” he said.
Okonkwo recalled that the ADC was founded by former National Chairman, Chief Ralphs Nwosu, an indigene of the South-East, and argued that the party’s coalition arrangement was never intended to sideline the region.
“The ADC was founded by Ralphs Nwosu from the South-East in 2005. He made the sacrifice to give up the party in 2025 for the coalition to usher in a better Nigeria. He couldn’t have made that sacrifice to marginalise his own people,” he stated.
According to him, the South-East had already relinquished key positions within the coalition and deserved consideration for the vice-presidential slot.
“I did not join the coalition to assist in the further marginalisation of my own people. I am of the opinion that if we made a sacrifice to give up the National Chairman and the President, it will amount to unpardonable injustice to deny us the Vice President in 2027,” he said.
Okonkwo further disclosed that his only request to Atiku was to demonstrate his commitment to the political inclusion of the South-East by choosing a running mate from the region.
“The only favour I asked Atiku Abubakar, who openly declared that he is the pathway to the presidency of the South-East, is to show it by choosing someone from the South-East to be his Vice,” he stated.
He maintained that his political involvement has always been driven by the desire to build a Nigeria where no region, ethnic group or individual is marginalised.
“I joined politics to fight for a better Nigeria where no region, Geo-Political Zone, or person will be marginalised,” he added.
His declaration is expected to fuel fresh debate over zoning, equity and power-sharing within the opposition coalition as preparations intensify for the 2027 presidential election.

Court orders INEC to deregister ADC, Accord, three others
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.
The other political parties the court directed the electoral body to deregister are the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The court order followed a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu.
The National Forum of Former Legislators had, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, prayed the court to determine whether INEC has a constitutional obligation to remove political parties that fail to meet the electoral performance thresholds set out in Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as reinforced by the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s regulations.
It was the position of the plaintiff that the five political parties listed as defendants in the matter had persistently failed to meet the constitutional benchmarks required to retain their registration.
The former legislators stressed that the requirements include winning at least 25 per cent of votes in a state during a presidential election or securing at least one elective seat at the national, state, or local government level.

They told the court that the ADC and the four other parties performed poorly in both the 2023 general elections and by-elections conducted by INEC, thereby failing to win seats across key tiers of government.
The litigants insisted that the continued existence of the ADC and the other defendants as recognised political parties is unlawful and undermines the integrity of the country’s electoral system.
Among other reliefs, the plaintiff urged the court to declare that INEC is duty-bound to deregister such parties.
It further urged the court to compel the commission to deregister the five political parties before preparations for the 2027 elections advance further.
Beyond declaratory reliefs, the plaintiff prayed the court to restrain the five affected parties from participating in general elections or engaging in political activities such as campaigns, rallies, and primaries.
It also sought a court injunction restraining INEC from recognising or dealing with the parties in any official capacity unless and until they strictly comply with constitutional provisions.
The judgment may affect the chances of candidates of the affected political parties, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to contest the 2027 presidential poll.
