We’ll resist plot to turn Nigeria into one party state — Wabara

Senator Adolphus Wabara

Former Senate President and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has vowed that any attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to turn Nigeria into one party state, would be vigorously resisted.

Senator Wabara who was responding to the reported mass resignation of some key PDP members in the South East geo-political zone, accused the APC of using some elements in the PDP to disintegrate the party.

Recall that former Governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, on Tuesday, resigned his membership of the PDP, citing the lingering controversy over the position of the PDP National Secretary.

Barely 24 hours after the former Governor’s exit, PDP was hit by a wave of resignation following the alleged resignation of some of its key members and officials in Imo State.

Some of the National officers from Imo State who had allegedly resigned from the PDP included: a BoT member, Chief Chris Okewulonu, ; four zonal officers – Mr Stanley Ekezie, ex-officio Zonal Officer; Chief Austin Okeke, Zonal Publicity Secretary; Chief Emeka Nwokeke, Zonal Organising Secretary and Zonal Woman Leader, Mrs Ruth Nkwocha.

Others were three state officers and a Local Government Chairman of the party in Imo, namely: Mr Kissinger Ikokwu, State Legal Adviser; Mazi Emenike Nmeregini, State Publicity Secretary; Chief David Abanihi, State Assistant Treasurer and Hon Sambazz Iheaturueme, Obowo LGA Chairman.

Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Obinna Onwubuariri; Mr Chibuzor Agulana, Prof Obioma Iheduru, Hon Mrs Amarachi Owuamanam , were also said to be among those who had dumped the Big Umbrella.

Reacting to the development, Wabara said that the PDP BoT would swiftly wade in to halt further exit of other members.

Senator Wabara said that the BoT as the conscience of the party would not allow self-seeking individuals to be used by the ruling party to destabilize the PDP.

He said: “The BoT will wade in expeditiously to save the deliberate and planned extinction of this great party, the People’s Democratic Party.

“The BoT with the array of distinguished men and women of invaluable experience and integrity will surely salvage the party. The BoT did it once and shall do it again no matter whose ox is gored.

“The BoT will never allow the APC to use some characters in the PDP to turn this beautiful and sweet Nation (Nigeria) into a one party state. “

The former Senate President said that the PDP had an array of seasoned politicians capable of weaving whatever internal challenges rocking the party.

He expressed optimism that very soon, whatever grievances some members of the party had would be amicably resolved.

Senator Wabara had before the just-concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the PDP in Abuja, said that those expecting PDP to implode would be disappointed.

Analysts blame the PDP crisis on the supremacy battle between the party’s presidential candidate in 2023, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. (Saturday Vanguard)

We are now in full control of Rivers — PDP

Published

on

•Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are now in full control of Rivers State, the PDP has claimed.

In a statement by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba in Abuja during the weekend, the PDP asserted that all the Rivers legislators who defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) have completely lost all claims to their seats while all legal considerations now favour the PDP.

According to Ologunagba, APC is only pursuing mere mirage by making unintelligent claims and trying to subvert Nigeria’s constitution in its recent statements on the vacation of seats by “former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who lost their membership of that Legislative House upon defection from the PDP.”

Ologunagba further stated: “ It is indeed pathetic for the APC to think that the facts and true import of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to the effect that the former lawmakers have since lost their seats can be muddled and lost in litigations and lengthy press statements.

“Interestingly, in the failed bid to subvert the Constitution to give the former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly a lifeline, the APC ended up admitting the clarity of the proviso of Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in voiding their seats upon their defection.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution is clear in providing that “a member of a House of Assembly shall vacate his seat in the House if – being a person whose election to the House of Assembly was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before expiration of the period for which that House was elected:

“Provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”

Emphasising that all House of Assembly members who defected to the APC are now effectively mere ‘former members’, Ologunagba urged the APC and the legislators to forget any possibility of ever seeing their party taking charge of Rivers State.

“The former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, for reasons best known to them, wittingly vacated and summarily lost their seats as nothing in the proviso protects or allows them to retain their membership of the Rivers State House of Assembly after decamping from the political party upon which they were elected

“These former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have only themselves to blame for Constitutionally vacating their seats; a course which cannot be reversed or remedied. They should admit their miscalculation and bear the inescapable consequences.

“This is especially so as the Supreme Court, in the case of Abegunde vs Ondo State House of Assembly and Others, has since clarified and affirmed the import of the proviso in Section 109(1)(g) in validating the automatic vacation of a seat by a member of a Legislative House who defected from the Party upon which he was elected into that House.

“For the umpteenth time the PDP cautions the APC to steer clear of Rivers State; it should perish the thoughts of forcefully taking over the State and stop exasperating the public space by seeking to reverse the irreversible.

“The APC should come to terms that with the vacation of seats by the former lawmakers, the quorum of the Rivers State House of Assembly will be determined by the number of the remaining lawmakers as provided by law; until a bye-election is conducted to fill the vacancies now existing in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection by the former members,” Ologunagba asserted. Army spits fire as soldiers detained over protest break guard room

Published

•Spokesman of Nigerian Army, Onyema Nwachukwu
Authorities of the Nigerian Army have launched a probe into how some soldiers kept in guard rooms (detention) for various offences broke the facility located at the 8 Division Garrison, Sokoto.

It also said it would go ahead to implement the directive of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to look into the state of all Nigerian Army detention facilities, saying the detainees’ lives matter.

Daily Trust had reported how a soldier identified as Lance Corporal Charles Ekefure with 17NA/76/1660 was reportedly shot following complaints by some detained soldiers who broke out of their cells (guard rooms) in Sokoto State.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday led to the detention of about 100 soldiers, with 10 detained in each cell – the development that led them to clamour for better food and improved living conditions.

Reacting to the development on Saturday, the spokesman of Nigerian Army, Onyema Nwachukwu, said the service shall not shy away from appropriately sanctioning the soldiers involved in what he described as “unruly behaviour” in its Sokoto detention facility.

He said, “The Army Headquarters has taken note of a report and audiovisual recording circulating on social media produced by some of its personnel held in custody at the 8 Division Garrison detention facility.

“Undoubtedly, the Sokoto barracks detention facility incident is quite unfortunate and an embarrassment to the sound administration efforts of the Chief of Army Staff, to say the least, and in line with his leadership style, the COAS has instituted an appropriate investigation into the incident to determine whether it is an isolated or widespread situation in similar detention facilities.

“While the service regrets and has gleaned some lessons from the incident, it will however not condone the manner the inmates expressed their purported grievance. Mutiny and conduct prejudicial to service order are grievous misconducts, and this very incident epitomises such.”

Nwachukwu, a Major-General, said they would be sanctioned for failing to exhaust all available options to channel their complaints to the appropriate authorities.

He added that if it was discovered they did and nothing was done, necessary administrative actions will be taken against anyone found to have failed to discharge his or her duties effectively.

Nwachukwu said, “As such, as Army, on the one side, goes ahead to implement the COAS directive to look into the state of all NA detention facilities, as detainees’ lives also matter, the Service shall not shy away from appropriately sanctioning the soldiers involved in the unruly behaviour in its Sokoto detention facility for failing to exhaust all available options to channel their complaints to the appropriate authorities and if it was discovered they did and nothing was done, necessary administrative actions will be taken against anyone found to have failed to discharge his/her duties effectively.

“While the Service is mindful of its subjective oversight engagements by statutory bodies, it remains primarily a responsible, self-regulating professional body.

“As such, the Service remains committed to ensuring that everyone, even those found guilty of aiding terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits, and are awaiting confirmation of their sentencing, as it has been discovered in the Sokoto case is accorded a relatively decent life until their judgment is confirmed and executed.

“This commitment underscores the NA’s dedication to upholding professional standards and maintaining a just and fair system. Enugu Central Station will give capital city face-lift, create jobs, reduce crime - Ozor
Enugu Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor briefing Journalists on Saturday

The Enugu state government is set to commence construction of the Enugu Central Station comprising a dual terminal for interstate and intrastate transportation at the Holy Ghost area of Enugu city as part of Dr. Peter Mbah administration’s determination to give the state a face-lift.

The ultra-modern transport interchange will also create employment opportunities for the people and reduce crime in the state, according to the State Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, who spoke with Journalists at the site of the project, where the old structures vacated by the former occupants were being demolished on Saturday.

Ozor explained that clearing of the site commenced on Friday after the government had relocated the former occupants of the area and paid adequate compensations to deserving beneficiaries.

He said that the government embarked on the clearing of the area following the agreement reached with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the federal ministry of transportation over the land which belonged to the NRC.

The commissioner said: “Today, you are standing in front of a proposed site for Enugu Central Station which is a dual terminal for interstate transportation and intrastate transportation.

“The land here is owned by NRC and leased to 29 tenants for an average of 10 years to 25 years.

“The state government has entered into agreement with the NRC and the Federal Ministry of Transportation to lease the land for the construction of the proposed terminal.’’

Ozor said that before beginning the clearance, the state government, through the NRC, had paid compensations to deserving tenants in the area.

“Apart from the compensations, we also engaged all stakeholders since last year and we gave notices since October, 2023.’’

Ozor further said that the timeline for the project was 12 months, adding that the project was the phase 1 of the planned state’s transportation infrastructure project.

“The terminal will commence before the end of the month and in 12 months, the government of Dr Peter Mbah will deliver this project for the benefit of seven million Enugu citizens.

“It is not only this, we are going to build another one in Garki, Abakpa Nike areas and Nsukka making them four under phase 1 of the transport infrastructure project, ” he said.

The commissioner said that the management of the project would be private sector driven, adding that transportation was a big business.

He said it was only a serious governor like Mbah that could take such a bold decision that had attracted commendations from citizens of the state.

The Holy Ghost area of Enugu had been noted for its notoriety because of various transport companies conveying passengers day and night to all parts of the country.

Besides, the area had posed serious traffic challenge to motorists in the state capital as hawkers and commercial transporters virtually took over the dual-carriage way linking Okpara Avenue with Ogui Road and Zik’s Avenue.

The Advocate reports that the Mbah administration had since it’s inception in May last year demonstration its commitment to eradicating road congestions and other road traffic issues by removing all barriers on the roads and reconstructing over 80 roads that had almost become impassible within the state capital as well as providing solid concrete drainages for durability of the projects.
