FG to launch new National Identity Card with payment/social service features

The New National Identity card would be delivered in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS).

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched an innovative identity solution with payment functionality for all types of social and financial services.

The project would be powered by AfriGO, a National domestic card scheme, the Head of Corporate Communications of NIMC,  Dr Kayode Adegoke, announced in a statement in Abuja.

The statement reads:”The National ID card, layered with verifiable National Identity features, is backed by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which mandates NIMC to enrol and issue a General Multipurpose card (GMPC) to Nigerians and legal residents.

“This card will address the demand for physical identification enabling cardholders prove their identity, access government and private social services, facilitate financial inclusion for disenfranchised Nigerians, empower citizens, as well as encourage increased participation in nation-building.

“Only registered citizens and legal residents with the National Identification Number (NIN) will be eligible to request the card.

“The card, which will be produced according to ICAO standards, is positioned as the country’s default national identity card.

“In addition to this functionality, cardholders will also be able to use the cards as debit or prepaid cards by linking same to bank accounts of their choice.

“The card shall enable eligible persons especially those financially excluded from social and financial services have access to multiple government interventions programs.

“In line with data protection regulation and public interest, NIMC remains committed to protecting cardholders’ personal data and will ensure compliance with international standards on data security protocols as security features that protect the confidentiality and safety of users’ information.

Key features will include:

“Machine-readable Zone (MRZ) in conformation with ICAO for e-passport information

Identity card Issue Date and document number in line with ICAO standard.

“Additional features include travel, health insurance information, micro loans, agriculture, food stamps, transport, and energy subsidies, etc.

“Nigeria’s quick response code (NQR) containing the national identification number

Biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and pictures, as the primary medium for identity verification through the data on the card chip

Offline capability that allows transactions in areas with limited network coverage or zero infrastructure connectivity

“Functionality as a debit and prepaid card catering to both banked and unbanked individuals

Request for cards by registered citizens and legal residents will be made available online, at any commercial bank, various agencies or agents participating in multiple programs and/or any NIMC offices nationwide.”

Police arrest prophet for rape, abduction in Enugu
Operatives of Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old Prophet, Chinecherem Nnamoko, for abducting and raping a girl sent to him for spiritual cleansing.

The suspected whose church in located in Amorji-Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area was also accused of unlawfullly being in possession of a pump action gun, another locally made gun and two live ammunition.

According the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, the suspect was arrested on May 1, 2024 by men of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad following the receipt of a report.

He was alleged that the prophet abducted, physically assaulted and had carnal knowledge of the female victim under the pretense of curing her of spiritual problems.

He said: “A preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect, an acclaimed prophet and owner of a church (names withheld), in the course of providing the said spiritual service, kept the victim beyond the number of days he promised her parents.

“He thereafter compelled them to sell their plot of land to pay him for services rendered. Meanwhile, a search executed in his premises led to the recovery of one pump action, one locally-made gun and two live cartridges. Further discreet investigation is ongoing.” (Daily Sun)

Tenant remanded in prison for setting his landlord’s house on fire

Court sends suspended UNICAL professor, lawyer to Kuje Prison

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Thursday ordered that a 35-year-old man, Dickson Peter, be remanded in a correction facility for allegedly setting his landlord’s house on fire.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the police charged the defendant with two counts of felony and arson.

The Magistrate, Mr M. Mudashiru, who did not take his plea due to lack of jurisdiction, ordered that he be remanded in the Abolongo Correctional Facility, Oyo Town.

Mudashiru said the remand is pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He adjourned the matter until July 23, 2024, for reference.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Femi Oluwadare told the court that Peter, on April 18, at about 12:30 am, was alleged to have unlawfully set fire to the house of his landlord, Cepas Okeme, and destroyed properties worth N6.5 million.

Oluwadare said that after he set the building on fire, it also spread to the next house property belonging to Bose Ali ‘F’ and destroyed property worth N3.5 million.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 443 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

Lady found dead at Abuja bridge, Police begin investigation

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a young lady identified as Kadoon Luisa Iornumbe in Abuja.

Luisa’s lifeless body was reportedly discovered by motorists at the Timper Garage bridge in Mpape area of the nation’s capital.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday morning when the deceased was heading to her work place.

According to eyewitnesses, Luisa, an indigene of Benue State was allegedly killed by the one-chance robbers who have been causing chaos in the capital city.

When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said the Command was aware of the development.

She said the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh had “directed the DC CID to conduct a discreet investigation” to ascertain the remote cause of the incident.
