Enugu Psychiatric Hospital rises against Staff insubordination
…upgrades over 200 staff
The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu, FNHE, has raised the alarm against one of it’s staff (name withheld) whom the institution has accused of sponsoring mischievous publications against the management of hospital and paints the institution in bad light.
Medical Director of the Hospital, Prof Monday Igwe raised the alarm, on Tuesday, in a press briefing, where he told the general public that there was no crisis in the institution, adding that people should ignore the sponsored social media blackmail against the authority of the hospital.
Igwe noted that the institution’s School of Post Basic Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing was never shut down, even after the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, suspended regulatory activities on the school because of the appointment of new headship of the school.
He noted that the school has full accreditation to train 50 psychiatric nurses per session and could not have admitted 700 students, beyond it’s quota, as was reported by the sponsored attack in the social media publications.
He however noted that the suspension of regulatory activities by the NMCN is being addressed quickly so that students who are due to write examinations by November can do so.
“We are working hard to sort out all pending issues so that the embargo can be lifted. Resolutions were taken in a meeting between the Federal Ministry of Health officials, Registrar, Nurding and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and Medical Director FNPH Enugu aimed at addressing issues related to the suspension of activities of NMCN in our school,” Igwe disclosed.

He however said that the school portal has been shut down while the 2023 admission into the school remains nullified while the Hospital will refund every Kobo duly paid to the institution for the purposes of the admission.
“We’re working towards lifting the embargo, the students are still there while we work on it.
“We have appointed three persons to act in the interim, from July to December, their names will be submitted to the midwifery council and their period of acting will cover the period of the students’ exams and the students will proceed on a three weeks holiday,” Igwe stated.
On staff welfare, the Medical Director disclosed that more than 200 staff who have additional and verified higher qualifications within the past four years have been upgraded.
Igwe said that the hospital’s management had placed staff welfare as its main focus, adding that in the past four years, there had been cordial working relationships with labour unions as all staff entitlements are promptly addressed.
According to him, this is more than all staff who got such privileges between 1995 and 2019; before this recent management came in.
He noted that the current management had not engaged in any sectionalism, nepotism or favouritism, as it always carried along the labour leaders and administrative departmental heads in such activities and others.
On false social media publications about the hospital, Igwe said the publications were mere imaginations without basis and might have arisen out of “hallucinatory experiences of the sponsors” who are bent on occupying positions they are not qualified for.
Igwe said that under his watch, the day-to-day running of the hospital had followed strictly Public Service Rules (PSR) and Financial Regulations (FR) as set out by the Federal Government and supervisory agencies.
He said that all employment made were monitored by the Federal Ministry of Health, Office of Head of Service of the Federation, Federal Character Commission and Board of Management of the hospital.
Igwe said: “The Medical Director ensures that due process is strictly followed in both employment and contract awards. The records are there for anyone to verify.
“Approvals for leave of absence and study leave in the past four years are considered and approved during Board of Management meetings. Every case has always been treated strictly according to public service rules without recourse to sentiments.”

Catholic Bishop shot dead
A Catholic bishop appointed to a central region of Mozambique by Pope Leo XIV was shot dead at home Saturday in what the country’s episcopal body called “mysterious circumstances”.
Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, 54, was shot in the chest “probably with a single bullet”, a spokesman for the criminal investigations bureau, Maximino Amilcar, told reporters outside the senior clergyman’s residence in the city of Quelimane.
He described the killing as “murder by gunshot”, adding that “it is not easy at this time to give details”.
The Vatican said the pope had “learned with deep sorrow of the grave act of violence that led to the death of His Excellency, Monsignor Osorio Citora Afonso”.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo issued a statement expressing his “deep sadness” at Afonso’s death, calling it “an irreparable loss for Mozambican society”.
Around a quarter of the population in the African country, a former Portuguese colony, is thought to be Catholic, based on the last census taken nearly a decade ago.

Afonso, born in Mozambique, served in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Italy, then as auxiliary bishop in Maputo in 2023 before being made a bishop the following year.
In July 2025, Pope Leo transferred him to the diocese of Quelimane.
The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique said Afonso was “found lifeless and in mysterious circumstances that need to be made clear”.

Police rescue ex-Power Minister Adelabu’s Sister, Twin Sons from kidnappers
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have rescued Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, following a rescue operation that culminated in a gun battle with suspected kidnappers.
Police sources said the operation was carried out on Saturday evening at about 7:30 p.m., leading to the safe recovery of the victims, who had been held captive since their abduction earlier in the week.
Mrs. John-Paul, who is the younger sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin sons were reportedly kidnapped at about 7:30 a.m. on June 3 while travelling to drop the children at school.
According to security sources, police operatives tracked the kidnappers through sustained intelligence gathering and coordinated tactical operations.
The pressure mounted by security personnel reportedly forced the suspects into a confrontation with officers.
During the exchange of gunfire, two suspected kidnappers were killed, while two firearms were recovered from the scene.

The victims were rescued unharmed and have since been reunited with their family.
Security agencies have launched a manhunt for other members of the kidnapping syndicate believed to have escaped during the operation.
Investigators suspect some of the fleeing suspects may have sustained gunshot injuries.
The police have not yet released an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the rescue operation, the identities of the suspects, or the exact location where the victims were rescued.
The abduction and subsequent rescue have drawn public attention due to the victims’ relationship with Adelabu, a prominent political figure and former cabinet member.
Security operatives are continuing investigations as efforts intensify to apprehend the remaining members of the gang and dismantle the wider kidnapping network.
