INEC’s chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, reportedly ordered the relocation of the election materials.
The Social Democratic Party, SDP had expressed concerns over the safety of the materials in INEC office Lokoja.
Fearing that the materials which were vital for it to prove its case could be destroyed by its major opponent in the election petition case, the SDP called on the commission’s chairman to move them to Abuja to prevent the rampaging thugs in Lokoja from destroying them.
The materials, including election results, Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS), and other sensitive documents, were loaded onto trucks on Friday afternoon, departing under heavy security to the Federal Capital Territory.
It was gathered that the materials are no longer safe because of recent attacks on INEC officials, offices, and tribunal members by some political thugs. Therefore, the commission ordered the removal of the materials to a safe place.
Recall that the Kogi State Election Tribunal Petition had also moved its sitting from Lokoja to the National Judicial Council complex in Jabi, Abuja.
