Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom: Ohanaeze plans another visit to Buhari

• I will prostrate to beg Buhari – Ezeife

The apex Igbo socio cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, is considering to send another powerful delegation to President Muhammadu Buhari to plead for the immediate release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in order to douse tension in the South East states.

“We, the Igbo leaders are planning to go. If our President wants me to kneel down, I’ll kneel down on behalf of everyone else, I’ll kneel down for him. If he wants me to prostrate, I’ll prostrate for him. But let him release Nnamdi Kanu and lets silence the people who are fighting against the resurgence of Nigeria and the black man,” former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, stated this on Monday.

The elder-statesman who weighed in on the controversy regarding the release of the IPOB leader, whom the Court of Appeal ordered should be discharged last Friday, aligned himself with those who believe his freedom would restore peace in the South East.

The foremost Igbo leader, who was a guest of Arise Television’s breakfast programme, The Morning Show, advised the Federal Government, on Monday, not to toy with the idea of heading to the Supreme Court to pursue the matter of the trial of the IPOB leader, whose remaining seven-count charge, bordering on treason was also quashed by the appellate court, out of the initial 15, from which eight were dismissed at the level of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He said that outside outright manipulation, nothing would come out of such a move.

Hear him: “Going to the Supreme Court is a waste of time and I think the government should face the facts and face the situation as it is. What do you gain from the Supreme Court and unless the Supreme Court is somehow dictated to there is nothing else left for the Supreme Court to do. The judgement of the Appeal Court is very clear, very total. I don’t know, except the Supreme Court would be told what to say by the government and it says so.

“But we have a new Chief Justice of the Federation and I don’t think that man is going to succumb to the kind of impunity. God in heaven, the almighty God, is preparing Nigeria. The Nnamdi Kanu’s case, very soon he will be released, very, very soon. Some people are giving money to people who don’t understand too much to say there will be no election, that’s nonsense, there will be election.

“And anybody who can see, will see that things are cooling down as a result of some movements. It is better we do it earlier than later.  Let the Federal Government not go to Supreme Court. It is of no use. It gives a wrong impression to the ordinary Nigerians like me. There’s not much to say, except to beg the Federal Government to see reason, not to be kind, but to see reason and do justice, not kindness.”

Ezeife, who quoted the Bible, explaining that just as it stated that the heart of the king was in the hand of God, said Ndigbo would take a recourse to prayers to soften the heart of Buhari to obey the order of the appellate court to release Kanu.

He maintained that the National Security Council (NSC) was wrong in its position to support the position of the government to pursue the case against Kanu further.

Apparently alluding to the fact that the body, which he suggested could also go with the sobriquet of National Insecurity Council, might not be independent in toeing the same line, he revealed that the process had already begun through the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, George Obiozo, for the meeting with the President to plead with him to let the matter be in the interest of peace in Nigeria.

His words: “Our leader, Prof. George Obiozor, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, called me the same day the issue came up and said that he was preparing for us to go and see the President to persuade him to do the right thing. And I told him that of course, I’m ready. He said very soon, he’ll organise, get an appointment and we go to the President.

“As for the National Security Council, well, I don’t know how independent the National Security Council is. But whichever council, National Insecurity Council or National Security Council, should look at the atmosphere and make judgement based on realism, realities. You don’t say you’re National Security Council. By the way, no Igboman is in that place. And this is one of the things that annoy the young men of Nigeria because the Federal government of Buhari is making every effort to push the South East out of Nigeria. But they cannot push us out of Nigeria. We’re here.

“We voted with our feet for one Nigeria. Anywhere you go, you remove the indigenes, we’re the next people. Our money is everywhere, developing everywhere. Just like our ancient dictum goes – ebe onye bi k’ona-awachi, where a person lives, he develops. The National Security Council should have done a bit better than joining the government as such.

“The long you keep Kanu in detention, the greater the problem you’re posing for us. For example, who is enjoying the fact that we’re sitting at home on Mondays? People who live by business are forced to sit at home on Mondays. Even the true IPOB, has cancelled it off, but people are hungry and if anything denies them opportunity – that is creating insecurity.

“This sit at home is another creation of insecurity. So, please, the earlier Kanu is released, the better for Eastern Nigeria, the better for Nigeria, the better for the hope of all blacks.”

The Commander, 4 Special Forces Command, Nigerian Army, Doma, Maj.-Gen. Olurotimi Awolo, has inaugurated a General Court Martial (GCM) to try 12 soldiers accused of various offences, including alleged murder, assault and aiding criminality.

Speaking during the inauguration on Tuesday in Doma, the Commander, represented by the President of the General Court Martial, Col. Salihu Ibrahim, said the convening order was issued pursuant to powers conferred on him by Section 131(2)(d) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He said the court was constituted to hear the cases of all accused personnel and determine each matter strictly on its merit.

“The court will be guided throughout the trial by the principles of natural justice as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“We are also mindful of the cardinal principle of criminal justice that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“Where the prosecution fails to establish any allegation beyond reasonable doubt, the court will discharge and acquit the accused person.

“Conversely, where an accused person is found guilty, the law will take its course in accordance with the provisions governing such offences,” he said.

He assured all parties of the court’s commitment to fairness, justice and professionalism, urging prosecution and defence counsels to avoid unnecessary delays and frivolous adjournments.

The court president maintained that speedy disposal of the cases would serve the interest of justice and ensure confidence in the military justice system.

However, trial could not commence immediately after the inauguration as six of the accused persons present in court were declared medically unfit to stand trial.

The court’s Medical Orderly, Sgt. Audu Ahmadu, informed the panel that five of the six accused persons had elevated blood pressure levels.

Following the development, the prosecutor, Capt. Shamsondeen Sadiq, urged the medical orderly to ensure that the affected personnel received adequate medical attention to enable the trial to commence.

The President of the court subsequently adjourned proceedings to a later date, which would be communicated to all parties.

Speaking with newsmen after the inaugural sitting, Barr. George Illah, counsel to one of the accused persons, commended the Command for constituting the court martial.

He expressed confidence in the competence of the panel, noting that the president of the court, other members and the Judge Advocate were qualified to discharge their responsibilities.

“As a defence counsel, I will do my best to ensure that the soldiers standing trial before this honourable court martial get the justice they deserve.

“It is important for people to understand that military personnel standing trial before a court martial are entitled to all constitutional and legal rights guaranteed under the law, and we will ensure that those rights are protected,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members of the General Court Martial include Col. A.A. Buhari, Lt.-Col. Victor Yamu, Lt.-Col. A.K. Karma and Lt.-Col. S. Abdullahi.

Others are Maj. J.M. Usendeng, Maj. A.D. Ahmed, Maj. U. Ahmed, Maj. S.L. Sagu, while Capt. U. Nna serves as Judge Advocate. (NAN)

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered the stay of execution of the judgment that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.

*In a unanimous decision, a three-member panel of the appellate court led by Justice A. B. Mohammed, berated Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja for flouting an order it made on May 22, which directed him to suspend proceedings before him.*

*The appellate court held that Justice Lifu’s action amounted to an affront on the hierarchy of courts.*

*It held that the lower court’s action was “the highest form of judicial impertinence,” stressing that the Supreme Court previously held that a judge who acted in such manner “is unfit for the bench as it amounts to judicial rascality.”*

*“Courts are enjoined to protect their integrity. This Court has supervisory authority over the trial court. The decision of the lower court to proceed with the judgment despite the express order of this court is a brazen violation of the hierarchy of the court and the 1999 Constitution.*

*“This court has the duty to invoke its powers in ensuring that its orders are made.*

*“The application for stay of execution is here yet granted. The enforcement of the judgment is stayed,” the appellate court held.*

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade have rescued Mrs. Abubakar, the widow of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted by bandits shortly before the retired senior military officer died in captivity.

According to military sources, the rescue operation was carried out in Tunga Village, where troops encountered the armed bandits holding her captive. During the exchange, the kidnappers reportedly shot Mrs. Abubakar before fleeing as soldiers advanced on their position.

The troops immediately secured the area, rescued her and administered emergency first aid.

Military authorities said Mrs. Abubakar sustained gunshot wounds and was bleeding when she was rescued. She is currently receiving medical treatment.

The rescue comes days after the burial of Major General Rabe Abubakar, whose death while in captivity sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of the country.

Following Major General Abubakar’s death, the Defense Headquarters’ Joint Task Force North West, under Operation Fansan Yamma, launched a major offensive operation, codenamed Operation Clean Sweep III, targeting terrorists and bandits operating in Matazu Local Government Area and neighbouring communities in Katsina State.
