Security in Anambra close to war situation — Soludo
Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has described the present security situation in the state as a near-war situation that needs enhanced security partnership to rid off.
The Governor stated this at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, when he received the new General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major General U.T. Musa, on Friday.
Governor Soludo also extended his condolences to the Nigerian Army on the recent attack by yet-to-be-identified gun men resulting to the death of 3 soldiers and a civilian at Umunze.
“Anytime I hear that a law enforcement agent is killed, my heart bleeds. Unfortunately, in the homeland, there is actually an internal war ongoing, albeit a gorilla warfare. It is plain criminality and we will do anything within our power to contain this. We’ve tried to motivate even our vigilante to join in the business of securing the homeland because security is everybody’s business,” Governor Soludo said
The Governor further told the GOC, Major-General Musa to pay special attention on the Anambra-Imo boundary.
“If you condone off the boundaries between Anambra and Imo in a joint operation, you squeeze and take them out.” Governor advised

Describing the activities of the criminals, Soludo said: “They are less than beasts. Someone who takes pleasure in killing somebody.”
The Governor also told the visiting GOC of his personal experience, saying he was a victim. “I am victim. They came to where I was campaigning, they shot and killed people. I’ve seen it first hand. These are not human beings. For me, this is a war that we must win.” Soludo added.
According to Governor Soludo, the country is “technically at war and we must fight with everything we’ve got “
Speaking on the huge potentials in Nigeria but in human and material context, the Governor said “the country is destined to be the biggest black power on earth and we cannot allow these few miscreants to prevail over our collective will. They are less than 0.01 percent of the population. We shall continue to prevail”.
“Here in Anambra, I think the whole country is watching. The potentials are huge and working with you, I have no doubt in my mind that we’ve got strong partners. The security agencies we have in the state have been alive to their responsibilities”.
While stating that there is an ongoing amendment of the law to ensure that any building where methamphetamine (mkpurummiri) is produced, will be demolished, the Governor said that the infrastructure of the criminals has been largely degraded.
Earlier, Major General Musa appreciated the Governor for assisting the security agencies in the state, pointing out that the courtesy call is customary.
“My duty is to ensure the security of everyone in the south eastern states. To ensure that everyone carry out their responsibilities. We are aware of the security situation in the region which is gradually improving. Security is everybody’s responsibility. My prayer is that the region should be calm”.
The GOC continued, “cases of attack, poses new challenges. I assure you of the total commitment of the Nigerian Army. We discovered that Anambra and Imo are volatile that gives us serious concern. The issue of agitation is there, but people capitalize on it to commit crime.”
The GOC thereafter called on the people to avail the security agencies with information within their reach.
“Without security, there won’t be development. Drug is a major contributor to crime,” he concluded. (Saturday Sun)

Shock, as U.S.-based doctor dies during free medical mission in Abia
By IHECHINYERE CHIGEMERI-UWOM
Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of a U.S.-based Nigerian physician, Dr Uzoma Nwaubani, who was in the state for a medical mission.
Otti, in a condolence message signed by him and issued on Friday in Umuahia, said that he received the news of her passing with shock, describing her as a dedicated and compassionate medical practitioner.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the State Government in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) organised a five-day free medical outreach that held from April 13 to April 17.
The governor noted that the late Nwaubani was a member of the association and had returned to Nigeria with her husband and daughter, a final-year medical student in the United States, to provide free medical services to residents of Abia.
He said that while participating in the ongoing medical outreach, she developed a medical emergency and was immediately taken to a hospital.

According to him, a team of ANPA and local medical experts worked together to provide urgent critical care in a bid to save her life.
“Despite the gallant efforts of the highly skilled medical team to resuscitate her, she could not make it,” Otti said.
The governor extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, her loved ones, and members of ANPA, adding that the state government was already in communication with her family and the leadership of the association.
He promised that the government would provide the necessary support to the bereaved family and ANPA during the period of mourning.
Otti also commended the family of the late doctor and ANPA for allowing the medical mission to continue in spite of the loss.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the health and well-being of residents and visitors to the state.
The governor prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and for strength for her family to bear the loss. (NAN)
