Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly abducted 319 female internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ngala, the headquaters of Gambarou Ngala in Borno State.

A security source, who confided in our correspondent, also confirmed the abduction but said the number of the IDPs abducted was not up to 319 “What we hard is around 113.”

However, a source from the Babban Sansani IDPs camp, told Daily Trust  that the incident happened last Sunday, when the women went to fetch firewood in the bush for domestic and commercial purposes.

“They were surrounded by the insurgents in Bula kunte bush in the western part of Ngala town. They freed the old-aged and entered the bush with 319 abled young girls and some young boys.

“But, three of the girls who escaped and returned to Ngala said the boys (insurgents) took them to a bush close to Bukar-mairam village in Chad republic.

“They escaped in the dead of night after the insurgents fell asleep, trekking for two days before they arrived in Ngala.

“Most of the IDPs girls abducted were from Babban Sansani camp, and the rest from Zulum and Arabic camps.

“They went to the bush to fetch firewood for sale because the food we are getting from the camp is not enough to feed us. Life is so difficult here,” he said.

Another source from the security said they always warned the IDPs against going to some areas in the bush for fear of attack.

“We always warn them to stay within safe areas, but it’s the economic pressure that forces most of them to go. They have no means of livelihood other than cutting off the tree for sale.

25-year-old man kills girlfriend in Akwa Ibom
A 25-year-old man identified simply as Elisha has reportedly killed his girlfriend in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The reason for the dastardly act, which, according to the report, occurred during the rushing hours of Tuesday, could not be ascertained at press time.

The incident happened in a residential compound near the popular Beaulah International Nursery and Primary Schools on Atiku Abubakar Way in the metropolis.

According to neighbours, the tragedy, which occurred at about 7:00 AM, took the residents by surprise as some were rushing to work and dropping off children and wards at schools, and a crowd of sympathisers thronged the scene, blocking the double lanes and impeding the free flow of traffic.

When a reporter visited the scene, it was observed that the corpse of the victim and the suspected killer had already been taken to the police headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, while armed policemen were seen trying to calm down the situation.

A source who pleaded anonymity said the unfortunate incident happened around 7 AM on Tuesday when the suspect, who lives in the compound, came home with his girlfriend, said to be a nurse.

She explained that they got into the room, and a few minutes later, they overheard him beating her as both of them were struggling.

According to her, “An aged woman in the compound, on hearing the shouts, went and advised the boy to stop the beating, but he refused.

“Since we couldn’t do anything, we called the father, who lived away from the area, to come and control the situation.

During the trial, prosecuting counsel, Olusegun Olaotan, told the court that while the victim’s mother was bathing her seven-year-old daughter, she observed that something was wrong with her private part.

Upon persistent questioning, Olaotan revealed the minor told her mother how she was sexually abused by the convict.

“While giving her evidence in court, the second prosecution witness, who is the victim, said that the defendant used to pull aside her pants before inserting his finger into her vagina.

“Evidence of the third prosecution witness (medical doctor) corroborates that of the second prosecution witness. She testified that in the course of examining the victim, she discovered that the hymen was not intact. It was opened by 2cm,” Olaotan submitted.

Olaotan further said the victim mentioned the name of the defendant as the only person who repeatedly inserted his finger into her private part.

The prosecuting counsel urged the court to go ahead and punish the defendant for his misdeeds as evidence before the court is quite overwhelming and weighty enough to hold him guilty of rape and should be convicted accordingly.

In his judgement, Justice Abiodun Akinyemi held that the prosecuting counsel has established the case of rape against the accused and thereafter sentenced him to life imprisonment.
