Youths in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State have reportedly attacked and set fire to some offices belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid growing anger over insecurity and worsening economic conditions.

The youths reportedly took to the streets to protest the security challenges affecting communities in the area, as well as the rising cost of living and other difficulties facing residents.

During the protest, some APC offices were vandalised and reportedly set ablaze, while major roads were blocked, disrupting the movement of motorists and other road users.

Video footage from the incident showed a large crowd of youths gathered on a major road, with some of them involved in the destruction of properties.

The development has raised concerns over the growing frustration among residents in parts of Sokoto State, particularly communities affected by attacks and other criminal activities.

The protest came shortly after reports of renewed threats by terrorists operating in neighbouring Zamfara State.

Residents of Talata Mafara Local Government Area had reportedly been given a seven-day deadline by terrorists to provide ₦50 million, 50 cattle and 50 sheep or risk another attack.

The terrorists reportedly entered an open market in the area and issued the demands to residents. The threat followed several attacks allegedly carried out by the group against communities in the area.

Residents had blamed the repeated attacks on what they described as inadequate action by the government and security agencies.

According to residents, the terrorists had previously attacked communities, taken over farmlands and rustled cattle belonging to villagers without facing enough resistance from security forces.

The latest threat has therefore caused renewed fear among residents, who said the attackers had become increasingly bold in their activities.

The situation is also linked to a deadly attack on communities in Sauna Ward, Talata Mafara, in July.

Terrorists reportedly killed 22 farmers who were working on their farmlands during the attack.

The attackers were said to have travelled in large numbers on motorcycles after crossing the Anka–Mayanchi highway. They reportedly moved through communities including Ruwan Gora, Zauren Gora, Tulluwa, Unguwar Shanu, Tsangaya and Tundun Namali before reaching Sauna.

The journey reportedly covered nearly 50 kilometres as the attackers moved through several communities.

Residents said the attack occurred during the day, starting at about 2pm and continuing until around 5pm.

The terrorists were also reportedly involved in cattle rustling during the incident, although the exact number of animals taken was not immediately known.

Suspected bandits have allegedly kidnapped 18 students from Oyo State travelling from Sokoto State to their hometowns in Oke-Ogun, after attacking their chartered bus and killing the driver, sources familiar with the incident have said.

The students, who were travelling from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, were reportedly intercepted by the assailants along the route to Oyo State within the past 48 hours.

The abductors were said to have moved the victims towards the Mokwa axis.

The development has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students travelling between states, particularly along routes where commuters have repeatedly faced attacks and abductions.

An Oke-Ogun youth leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, clarifying that the victims were students of Gamji College of Health Technology and not Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as earlier reported.

“Sadly, the unfortunate incident is being confirmed by me because I’m from Oke-Ogun too, and our people have confirmed that it truly happened in the past 48 hours,” the youth leader said.

He explained that the students were travelling in a chartered bus from their institution in Sokoto to Oke-Ogun, with Igboho as their specific destination.

“But it wasn’t a bus conveying UDUS students. It was a bus taking students from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, to Oke-Ogun, Igboho to be precise,” he said.

According to him, the attackers killed the driver before taking the students away.

“The driver was killed and all the students were kidnapped. They have reached the Mokwa side,” he said.

The youth leader further disclosed that the driver’s remains had been buried.

“The driver was killed at the scene and his remains were buried on Saturday,” he said.

Other sources familiar with the incident said the number of abducted students could be as many as 18.

The sources said the students were travelling in a chartered bus arranged by their school to convey them to their respective hometowns in Oyo State when the vehicle was intercepted by the assailants.

They were reportedly taken away by the attackers after the driver was killed.

The latest incident comes barely days after 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members were reportedly abducted by gunmen in Imo State.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen reportedly attacked their two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

Efforts to obtain further information from the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, proved abortive, as he had not responded to messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

An aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, with 32 people — 25 passengers and seven crew members — reportedly on board.

The aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday.

A community leader had confirmed the crash, but said residents were yet to establish the exact location and other details.

He said: “Yes, it is true. A helicopter crashed at Igbokoda, Ondo State. But we don’t know the exact place and other details.”

However, NAF confirmed the incident on Monday in a statement, saying it had activated an immediate search-and-rescue operation following the crash involving an ATR-42 aircraft.

The aircraft was said to have been on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.

In a statement by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF said: “The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.

“Search and rescue operations, in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies, are currently ongoing.

“The NAF is committed to ensuring the success of the ongoing search and rescue efforts. Further details will be communicated in due course.”

Aviation Ministry

Also confirming the crash, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, disappeared after air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m.

Keyamo said the aircraft was en route to Lagos from Benin when all efforts to raise it on radio proved unsuccessful.

He said subsequent information confirmed that the aircraft had crashed close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda and that the wreckage had been located.

“Preliminary information suggests that there were 25 passengers and 7 crew members on board,” Keyamo said.

The minister did not provide further details on the condition or identities of those on board, as search and rescue operations were still ongoing.

Keyamo noted that the control and regulation of military aircraft were outside the authority of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

He, however, said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation and assistance in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

“Further information on this unfortunate incident will be made available subsequently,” he said.
