FG distributes agro-inputs worth N2.8b to 14,000 farmers in Anambra, Enugu

The Federal Government, on Tuesday, distributed agro-inputs to 14,000 farmers worth N2.8 billion in Anambra and Enugu States under the Adani-Omor Zone of Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme, Phase One (ATASP-1).

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this during the agro inputs distribution part of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP) in ATASP-1 Adani-Omor Zone in Ikem within Isi-Uzo Council Area.

Kyari, represented by Dr Peter Kursh, said the distributed farm inputs to ATASP-1 farmers were redeemed at subsidized rate, adding: ‘This exercise has cost the programme about N5 billion.”

The minister said that Adani-Omor Zone had not benefited because it was off season at the time of planning, hence the need to implement this laudable programme in Enugu and Anambra States of the Adani-Omor Zone.

“The programme competitively procured Agro-Dealers that will provide Agricultural Inputs to about 14,000 ATASP-1 farmers in Adani-Omor i.e Enugu and Anambra States at 50 per cent subsidy with a total cost of about N2.8 billion.

“Each of the benefitting farmer will receive a package of two bags of inorganic NPK/Urea fertilizer, one bag of organic fertilizer, 10kg of seeds of either maize/rice/sorghum and four litres of Agro-chemicals delivered through ICT platform,” he said.

Kyari noted that the agricultural policy of Federal Government aims at the attainment of self-sustaining growth in all the sub- sectors of agriculture and the structural transformation necessary for the overall socio-economic development.

According to him, the policy also meant to ensure improvement in the quality of life of Nigerians.

He said: “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, Federal Government is currently implementing the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) across the nation.

“Farmers have been registered and agro-inputs are being distributed to the farmers in the last dry season and the current rainy season.

“This significant milestone marks a crucial step in our commitment to empowering our farmers and enhancing agricultural productivity.

“By providing quality inputs, we aim to support our farmers in achieving higher yields and ensuring food security for Nigeria.”

Flagging the distribution, Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State appreciated Tinubu for his visionary agricultural policies as well as the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and African Development Bank (AFDB) for their support to the state through AtASP-1.

Mbah, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Patrick Ubru, said that subsidised Input distribution is one of such interventions coming on the platform of the National Agriculture Growth Scheme (NAGS)-AP, through ATASP-1 project.

According to the governor, this is a crucial step towards enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in our state.

He said: “The objective of the NAGS-AP project aligns perfectly with our vision of achieving food security, nutrition security, and sustainable development through agriculture.

“I commend the Federal Government for its commitment to providing agricultural inputs to our smallholder farmers, a move that resonates with the agenda of my administration in agriculture.”

Earlier, Gov. Chukwuma Soludo lauded President Bola Tinubu and
African Development Bank (AFDB) for assisting smallholder farmers to grow and provision of infrastructure to boost food production through ATASP-1.

Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture in Anambra, Dr Foster Ihejiofor, said that the distribution is a fulfillment of Federal Government earlier promise to smallholder farmers in 2023.

“The ATASP-1 has been highly beneficial to the participating communities in Anambra State and contributed to the educational and health wellbeing of our people,” the governor said.

The National Programme Coordinator ATASP-1, Mr Mohammed Arabi, noted that “ATASP is a game changer” in agricultural development focusing on wheat, rice, cassava and sorghum within the country.

Arabi noted that ATASP-1 had recorded tremendous progress in the past years of its operation.

According to him, notably among the achievements are construction of socio-economic infrastructures such as primary schools, community health centres, boreholes and hand pump, VIP latrines and community markets.

“Other achievements included technology demonstration centres, feeder roads and construction and rehabilitation of irrigation facilities across the seven states of the programme,” he said.

Dr Romanus Egba, Zonal Programme Co-ordinator of ATASP-1 Adani-Omor Zone, appreciated the Federal, Anambra and Enugu State governments for providing enabling environment to work together to give subsidised agro-inputs to farmers in the zone.

Egba said that today, “an average person is a farmer and these agro-inputs will go a long for bumper harvest, food production and food sufficiency in the country.”

One of the beneficiaries, Mr Paulinus Orji, a sorghum farmer, thanked the Federal Government and ATASP-1 for making the subsidised agro-inputs possible.

“These inputs we collect today, we are going to get bumper and bountiful harvest from it in few months to come,” Orji said.

Nigerian professor jailed 70 months in US for $1.4m fraud

A United States federal court has sentenced a Nigerian-born former nonprofit chief executive, Dr Nkechy Ezeh, to 70 months in prison for orchestrating a $1.4 million fraud scheme involving taxpayer and donor funds meant for vulnerable preschool children.

The sentencing was announced in a press release on Wednesday by the Office of the US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan.

The sentencing was delivered by Chief US District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou, who also imposed a concurrent 60-month sentence for tax evasion and ordered Ezeh to pay $1.4 million in restitution and $390,174 to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Ezeh, 61, of Kent County, Michigan, was the founder and former CEO of Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative, a West Michigan nonprofit that provided early childhood services in underserved communities.

She is also a former Associate Professor of Education and Director of Early Childhood Education Program at Aquinas College.

She was immediately remanded into federal custody after sentencing.

During the proceedings, Judge Jarbou described Ezeh as “a fraud and a thief,” adding that the scheme was “brazen and widespread,” and involved funds intended for some of the region’s most vulnerable children.

US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Timothy VerHey, said Ezeh diverted money meant for low-income children for personal use.

“Nkechy Ezeh’s greed is beyond reprehensible.

“She stole taxpayer and private-donor dollars meant for low-income children in our community. Instead of helping kids, she spent that money on herself.

“The stolen money could have supported hundreds of West Michigan children and their families. Judge Jarbou’s sentence was perfectly appropriate,” VerHey said.

According to court filings, Ezeh used stolen funds to finance personal expenses, including travel to Hawaii, Europe and Africa, as well as a family wedding.

Prosecutors also said she placed relatives on a “ghost payroll,” enabling them to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars for little or no work.

She was further accused of using intermediaries to transfer stolen funds to family members in Nigeria.

The nonprofit, ELNC, was funded by US federal programmes including Head Start, the Department of Education, and private donors. It provided meals, transport and support services to children in low-income communities.

Following the fraud, ELNC shut down in 2023, leading to the loss of funding for several preschools and the layoff of 35 employees.

A former bookkeeper at the organisation, Sharon Killebrew, who was identified as a co-conspirator, was earlier sentenced to 54 months in prison for her role in the scheme.

US authorities said the case highlights the abuse of federal grants and its impact on vulnerable communities, particularly children in low-income neighbourhoods.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the Internal Revenue Service–Criminal Investigation unit, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Clay Stiffler prosecuted the case.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he would serve only one term of four years if elected president, insisting he would serve only one term in office “even with a gun to my head.”

Obi made the statement in a clip from an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV on Thursday.

“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years,” he said in the circulating video.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the current administration’s economic policies, including borrowing and rising cost of living, saying Nigeria had entered one of its most difficult economic periods.

Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, where he came third behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Since the election, Obi has remained a key opposition figure, frequently criticising the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms.

Cities are the new engines of global prosperity. Across the world, nations are no longer competing merely on the strength of their natural resources; they are competing on the efficiency, innovation, livability and attractiveness of their cities. From Dubai to Singapore, from Kigali to Shenzhen, the story is the same: governments that deliberately build modern urban ecosystems create wealth, attract investors, generate employment, and redefine the future of their people.

This is precisely the philosophy driving *Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah*’s ambitious vision for Enugu State.

When Governor Mbah declared his determination to grow Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, many saw it as audacious. The construction of Smart Green Schools across the 260 political wards in Enugu State is creating the human capital pipeline that future industries within the Smart City will require. These schools are embedding digital literacy, innovation and modern learning systems into the educational ecosystem. The ongoing rollout of Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres ensures healthcare accessibility at the grassroots level, while the 300-bed international hospital is positioning Enugu as a destination for advanced medical services and medical tourism.

The International Conference Centre, alongside the nearly-completed five-star ICC hotels, further strengthens Enugu’s business tourism credentials.
