…warn criminals to steer clear of Enugu State

As Enugu State awaits the official commissioning of the Command and Control Centre and associated security facilities put in place by the Governor Peter Administration, heads of security agencies in the state have commended the governor for the huge investment towards the security of lives and property, warning criminal elements to steer clear of the state as crime-fighting had become more precise and less cumbersome.

The security chiefs described Governor Mbah as “a no-nonsense man, who has zero tolerance for security lapses or flaws,” and warned criminal elements to steer clear of the state.

They stated this after a tour of the Command and Control Centre in Enugu, noting that the state-of-the-art equipment, including the Artificial Intelligence-enabled cameras being installed across the state and on security vehicles spelt doom for criminals in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the security chiefs, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Anayo Uzuegbu, described Governor Mbah as “a man of aura, who is out to ensure that security reigns in the state.”

“After the strategy meeting of the forum of heads of security agencies in the state, we deemed it fit to come and see the Command and Control Centre; and honestly, what we saw here is wonder-evoking. The equipments here are highly sophisticated and highly phenomenal.

“From here, we will be able to identify any threats or criminal elements and go there to arrest the situation. By the time they will know what they are doing, we will appear to them like a ghost.

“This is one of the paramount and remarkable efforts by any state government. It demonstrates actually that he means well for his people. The Command and Control Center is highly sophisticated and highly wonderful.

“I want to say actually that we are very happy with that because it will make our operations less cumbersome. Now, we will reach everywhere we couldn’t reach before. All the stress we have been undergoing before this time in the course of our work will be very reduced.

“So, I want to say that the people of the state should sleep with their two eyes closed and do their businesses. Any attempt or actions inimical to the security of the state will be ruthlessly dealt with,” he stated.

The CP, however, enjoined parents and community leaders to intensify the crusade against crime and criminality.

“I urge the royal fathers, the clergy, and parents to preach peace to their subjects, congregants, wards, children, advising them to be of good behaviour and not to associate themselves with criminal elements who have nothing to offer to them,” Uzuegbu concluded.

Suspected bandits have allegedly kidnapped 18 students from Oyo State travelling from Sokoto State to their hometowns in Oke-Ogun, after attacking their chartered bus and killing the driver, sources familiar with the incident have said.

The students, who were travelling from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, were reportedly intercepted by the assailants along the route to Oyo State within the past 48 hours.

The abductors were said to have moved the victims towards the Mokwa axis.

The development has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students travelling between states, particularly along routes where commuters have repeatedly faced attacks and abductions.

An Oke-Ogun youth leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, clarifying that the victims were students of Gamji College of Health Technology and not Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as earlier reported.

“Sadly, the unfortunate incident is being confirmed by me because I’m from Oke-Ogun too, and our people have confirmed that it truly happened in the past 48 hours,” the youth leader said.

He explained that the students were travelling in a chartered bus from their institution in Sokoto to Oke-Ogun, with Igboho as their specific destination.

“But it wasn’t a bus conveying UDUS students. It was a bus taking students from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, to Oke-Ogun, Igboho to be precise,” he said.

According to him, the attackers killed the driver before taking the students away.

“The driver was killed and all the students were kidnapped. They have reached the Mokwa side,” he said.

The youth leader further disclosed that the driver’s remains had been buried.

“The driver was killed at the scene and his remains were buried on Saturday,” he said.

Other sources familiar with the incident said the number of abducted students could be as many as 18.

The sources said the students were travelling in a chartered bus arranged by their school to convey them to their respective hometowns in Oyo State when the vehicle was intercepted by the assailants.

They were reportedly taken away by the attackers after the driver was killed.

The latest incident comes barely days after 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members were reportedly abducted by gunmen in Imo State.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when gunmen reportedly attacked their two buses along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

Efforts to obtain further information from the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, proved abortive, as he had not responded to messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

An aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, with 32 people — 25 passengers and seven crew members — reportedly on board.

The aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday.

A community leader had confirmed the crash, but said residents were yet to establish the exact location and other details.

He said: “Yes, it is true. A helicopter crashed at Igbokoda, Ondo State. But we don’t know the exact place and other details.”

However, NAF confirmed the incident on Monday in a statement, saying it had activated an immediate search-and-rescue operation following the crash involving an ATR-42 aircraft.

The aircraft was said to have been on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.

In a statement by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF said: “The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.

“Search and rescue operations, in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies, are currently ongoing.

“The NAF is committed to ensuring the success of the ongoing search and rescue efforts. Further details will be communicated in due course.”

Aviation Ministry

Also confirming the crash, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, disappeared after air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m.

Keyamo said the aircraft was en route to Lagos from Benin when all efforts to raise it on radio proved unsuccessful.

He said subsequent information confirmed that the aircraft had crashed close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda and that the wreckage had been located.

“Preliminary information suggests that there were 25 passengers and 7 crew members on board,” Keyamo said.

The minister did not provide further details on the condition or identities of those on board, as search and rescue operations were still ongoing.

Keyamo noted that the control and regulation of military aircraft were outside the authority of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

He, however, said he had spoken with the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and pledged the ministry’s full cooperation and assistance in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

“Further information on this unfortunate incident will be made available subsequently,” he said.
