Youths in Enugu state under the aegis of Enugu Innovative Youths have announced their decision not to participate in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 – 10, 2024, expressing fears that the exercise could be hijacked by hoodlums as was the case with the ENDSARS protest that caused the nation heavy losses.
The youths appealed to residents of the state especially the youths to shelve the planned protest, which the organizers said was principally aimed at drawing attention to the hardship being faced by the citizens.
Addressing a press conference after their meeting in Enugu on Friday, the spokesperson of the group, Jude Chikanso Aniagu, who lamented that Nigerian youths who are presumed to be the leaders of tomorrow have been found in a state of helplessness and despondency owing to the blurring illumination of their bright future, called for peace and calmness.
Aniagu, who presented the resolution of the meeting attended by youths from all 17 local government areas of Enugu State, expressed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
While acknowledging the country’s dire situation, including widespread hunger, financial struggles, and a high debt ratio, Aniagu said the group, however, expressed satisfaction that “Enugu State is making significant progress under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.”
Although the group recognises the justification for the proposed Nationwide Hunger Protest scheduled for August 1-10, 2024, they urged their peers to reconsider participating in the protest, citing the positive developments and “breath of fresh air” in Enugu State.
He said “while the proposed Nationwide hunger Protest on August 1, 2024, is justifiable owing to the current state of affairs of our country, we call for peace and calmness in Enugu State and a rethink and retreat from the proposed Protest by our youths.
“Nigeria at the moment is on the brink of collapse owing to the hunger and financial downturn of the country necessitated by the removal of subsidy from essential commodities like Premium Motor Spirit (fuel) with high cost of food and servicing of high debt of the country among others.
“We believe that while the Nationwide hunger Protest in the country may be imminent and Justified on many grounds, we strongly appeal that it is rather very premature in our state under our dear Governor, Peter Mbah as Enugu State is currently experiencing the breath of fresh air in all sectors.”
The group added: “Enugu State is our own and one of the most peaceful and productive states of the federation. We cannot relapse into a state of anarchy and infrastructural deficit, which the nationwide protest will bring.
“Enugu youths must resist any attempt to destroy or deface the aesthetics, beauty, and ambience of Enugu under Gov. Mbah’s excellent and stellar performance in the state.”
The group stated that they did not want to lose the lives of Enugu youths in the protest, which they claimed hoodlums were planning to hijack to further their sinister motives of triggering attacks on peaceful youths of the state.
“While we call for calm among our youths in the state, we are also calling on the Federal Government and the State Government under Gov. Mbah to engage Enugu youths in dialogue on the best way to close the gap in unemployment ratio and poverty headcount index ratio in the state, especially among the youths.
“We are also aware that the Enugu State Government has plans for job creation for the youths through his proposal of strategic programmes and training in Information Technology and Entrepreneurship development.
“We must not lose our lives to this protest but must strive to be beneficiaries of this lofty vision.
“We are aware that any protest in Enugu will destroy our common heritage which Governor Mbah is assiduously working to revive through his massive infrastructural projects in our dear state, hence, a call for calm and peace,” the statement partly read.
