…accuses Obi of introducing dangerous passions to Nigerian politics

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has said it will not allow the thought or activities of the followers of the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, Peter Obi, distract it from its focus on governance.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Ononuga, who stated this during an interview aired on Mic On Podcast, anchored by Seun Okinbaloye, also accused Obi of introducing a dangerous slant to the Nigerian politics by deploying religious and ethnic passions in his campaigns.

Followers of Obi, also known as the Obidients, have been known to be passionate and most times rude and abrasive, especially on various social media platforms, to other citizens not sharing their views and ideology. They have also been most antagonistic of the Tinubu administration.

However, reacting to a question on whether Obi’s politics and his followers, the Obidients, are capable of posing a threat to President Tinubu’s chances in 2027, Onanuga said the administration is currently very busy with governing Nigeria and has no time to entertain thoughts about 2027 politics for now.

“As of now, we are busy with governance and we don’t want our attention diverted from the focus of what the government is trying to do. We are very busy, we’re not even looking at them now”, he said.

Speaking about Obi’s political style at the last election, he said “what I know about the campaign of Obi was that for the first time in a very long while in our country, we had a candidate who was inflaming ethnic passion and that was the way the election went at that time, he was inflaming ethnic and religious passions, bringing two dangerous things to our politics; ethnicity and religion. That was what he did and those things were dangerous to our politics”.

Asked if he believed there are those who are out to intentionally sabotage the Tinubu administration, the Presidential Spokesman said “of course, it is very clear unless people are not perceptive. Up till now, some are still writing that Bola Tinubu stole the presidency and some people are saying that the man who came third actually won the election, and they are very unapologetic about that.

“How could somebody who came third how could he have won that election? You can even see when they were talking about the naira, some people were just happy that the Naira was going downhill. You can trace them. People who are saying so are members of the Obidient movement”, he asserted.

He debunked the belief in some quarters that President Tinubu also employed religious tactics, especially in his choice of a deputy, noting that the choice of Vice President Shettima was basically because of other qualities he is endowed with and not his religious persuasion.

He said: “If Asiwaju did that, he wouldn’t have lost Lagos”.

He said the Muslim/Muslim ticket of the APC at the polls “was not religious. You could see that the Muslim/Muslim ticket did not win him massive votes, let’s say in Borno, where his deputy came from. For the man he picked as his VP, he believe that Shettima has the qualities to be his vice president and that’s why he picked him, he was not looking at religion.

“Let me give you an incident. We went somewhere recently and we found out that most of the people in the media section of this government are actually Muslims. I was born a Muslim, but it was mere coincidence, when they were picking them, nobody was looking at their religion. Ditto,

“When President Tinubu was picking Shettima as his vice, he was picking Shettima, he was not looking at him as a Muslim. He was looking at Shettima, from the Northeast part of the country, who can add some values to his campaign, to his winning the Presidency.

“Shettima earned the vice presidency because of his contributions to that campaign, he was with him all the way, even before the primary. When you want to appoint someone to work with you, you have to count loyalty, it’s very vital. Even the quality of the person is also very important and you can see what Shettima has been doing; he’s loyal to the President and he has shown a lot of qualities as Vice President”, he said.

Asked to compare President Tinubu with his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Onanuga said it would be too early to be drawing conclusions on performances as President Tinubu is barely a year in the saddle.

He also pointed out that the two leaders have their human differences and different ways of attending to issues, but noted that former President Buhari had been unfairly judged by many commentators, saying he tried his best for the country, especially in the area of infrastructure development and the enrichment of the legal system.

Many persons are feared killed, with several others wounded, after gunmen attacked mourners during a mass burial in Nding Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims were said to have been attending the burial of seven persons killed in an earlier attack on the community.

The Incident, according to sources, occurred on Wednesday afternoon as villagers gathered to conduct the burial rites.

It was gathered that the assailants, who had been observing the ceremony from surrounding hills, suddenly descended on the community and opened fire on mourners as they were digging graves.

An eyewitness, a journalist, Masara Kim, told our correspondent via telephone that about five communities were experiencing simultaneous attacks by the gunmen.

He said the mourners had barely dug a shallow grave when the attackers struck, forcing them to hurriedly bury the bodies and flee for safety.

According to him, “There is an ongoing, massive attack on communities south of Jos. More than five communities are under simultaneous assault. While we were at the burial site, the attackers emerged from the hills and began shooting.”

He added that a man was shot dead in his presence, noting that local defenders, armed with hunting rifles and locally made weapons, were overwhelmed by the attackers.

Kim said he narrowly escaped, adding that many residents fled the community as the gunmen advanced, while the exact casualty figure could not be ascertained due to the chaotic situation.

When contacted, the publicity secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, described the situation as “terrible”, adding that efforts were underway to rescue persons trapped in the area.

Wife cuts off husband’s penis after he insisted his previous wife moved in with them

A man’s penis has been permanently compromised after his wife allegedly chopped it off with a kitchen knife because he demanded that his other wife move into their family home.

The couple, of Bangladeshi heritage, had recently relocated to the town of Angri in Campania, Italy, where the husband had found a house spacious enough to accommodate both his wives.

Both bigamy and polygamy are illegal in Italy, but the practice persists within certain communities.

The 35-year-old second wife was against the idea of cohabiting with the first wife, triggering the disagreement. She then allegedly castrated him when he was taking a nap after lunch.

The husband awoke screaming in agony as blood poured from the injury. He stumbled onto a first-floor balcony and cried out for assistance.

Two women passing by heard his screams, entered the property, and managed to stem the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

They reportedly put the detached penis on ice in the hope it could be reattached.

However, surgeons stated reattachment was impossible as the organ was “permanently compromised.”

Upon arrival, police discovered the wife wandering around in a state of shock, allegedly still holding the knife. She was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The police are also probing whether the husband was drugged before the assault.

A team of Carabinieri police, led by Commander Gianfranco Albanese and local prosecutor Gianluca Caputo, are still investigating the alleged knife attack.

Angelo Pisani, a lawyer and founder of an organisation that campaigns against domestic abuse, commented on the case and said: “This is a case of unprecedented violence.”

The domestic abuse lawyer added: “This kind of violence must always be condemned, regardless of who committed it.”

Enugu Keke Riders rally for Mbah’s reelection, hail him as a kindhearted leader

Keke Riders rally for Gov Mbah’s reelection
Spread the love

Thousands of tricycle riders across Enugu State turned out in a massive show of support for Governor Peter Mbah on Monday, endorsing his reelection bid in a display of growing grassroots momentum.

The operators, popularly known as Keke riders, rode their tricycles decorated with stickers and images of Governor Mbah from Abakpa to Okpara Square, Emene to Okpara Square, Agbani Road to Okpara Square, Ogui Road to Okpara Square, New Haven, and through Nkpokiti, Ebeano Tunnel, Holy Ghost, Ziks Avenue, Timber Shade, UNEC Gate, IMT Gate, and others.

Speaking to reporters, the Chairman of the association, Comrade Kingsley Edeh, said the Mbah administration had created an enabling environment, such as security and good roads, which had drastically affected their spending on the maintenance of their tricycles.

“The governor is a kindhearted man. He accepted everyone and gave everyone an enabling environment for our people to do business in the state.

“We have seen that our revenue, the one we pay, is going somewhere. We looked at the developmental strides of the governor and said we want to organise a big solidarity and endorsement rally for Governor Mbah as the man we want in 2027.

“We are endorsing him for 2027 so he will continue his good work as governor. We don’t want any other person.

“Many politicians lie about what they didn’t do. But his own is ‘e dey play, e dey show.’

“See the roads he is constructing everywhere. Before now, we visited mechanics every week and spent our earnings because of bad roads. But today, we are now seeing dividends of democracy. At least, nobody can deny the fact that no other governor comes close to what our governor has done in less than three years.

“Again, with the 260 Smart Schools and 260 Type 2 Health Centres in all the wards, we will have more disposable income because the Smart Schools are totally free. They even give free food and uniforms. Very soon, our children will be knowledgeable like children in America and Europe.

“See also the International Conference Centre. People come from Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and from all over Nigeria and even abroad every now and then for big conferences, and we make a lot of money,” he stated.

The group equally denounced the allegations of over-taxation in Enugu, commending Mbah for phasing out cash payments in revenue collection, which they said induced corruption, confusion, and union crises in the past.

“Our revenue collection is no longer chaotic. We pay online. No more thuggery. If you bring paper to collect any form of revenue, we resist it because we know that it is no longer business as usual. So, we now have peace, accountability, no more factions, and fighting in the system because of revenue.

“It is also a falsehood for people to say the governor is overtaxing Keke riders. It is pure falsehood. We are paying the minimum money required from us, and we are happy with how the governor is utilising it to do our roads and other projects.

“In fact, the people who were collecting cash before Mbah came and doing all manner of sharp practices are the ones spinning the falsehood because they are not happy,” Edeh added.

They insisted that the governor must do his second tenure, “whether he likes it or not.”

“We will massively vote for him. As you could see, we are determined. Anyhow they want it, we are going to put the governor there. Even if he wants to run back to his business in Lagos, we will push him back into that seat to complete his term,” he vowed.
