The Federal Government has given the Plateau State Government an order to prosecute  perpetrators of attacks on the state.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Samuel Jatau, made this known while addressing  newsmen shortly after the State Security Council meeting on Wednesday at Government House Jos.

The meeting was presided by Gov. Caleb Mutfwang.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Plateau has been recently bedevilled with series of  continuous attacks in communities in Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) and other parts of the state, where 300 lives have been reported lost

The SSG said that Muftwang’s administration has the will power to put an end to the attacks.

”We have procured the fiat to prosecute any crime here in Plateau State and that is the main target,”he said.

He said that the meeting was held to review the security situation in the state, particularly in the crisis prone areas.

According to him, peace was being restored in the crisis area, he however said that there was still the need to step up efforts and sustain it.

”This government has the political will, have the zeal and we are willing to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime,’’ he said.

He explained that the government was taking insecurity in Plateau with all seriousness which was demonstrated by the visit of the Inspector General of Police(IGP) to the state on assessment tour.

He said that Plateau was chosen by IGP Kayode Egbetokun as the first state to visit in his nationwide tour, which was extended to Mangu for the on the spot assessment because of the urgency to address the situation.

He added that the meeting was convened to also welcome the new General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, and Commander, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Maj.-Gen. Abdulsami Ibrahim  and the Special Adviser to the governor on Security Matters, retired Brig. Gen. Gakji Shipi to the council.

Explaining further on the procurement of fiat, the Attorney-General of Plateau, Mr Philemon Dafi said the state has suffered from lack of prosecution of conflict perpetrators which could be one of the major reasons to the lingering insecurity.

”Now, we in the state have suffered a dearth of lack of prosecution of cases since the Plateau crisis, 22 years down the road.

”Nobody has ever been prosecuted, successfully convicted and sentenced to any term of imprisonment for 22 years.

” This is quite sad and the perpetrators of this crime are not ghosts. They are human beings, body and flesh. Nobody has had the political capacity, strength and legal equipment to do so.

” We have procured the Federal Attorney-General’s fiat to insist that such offence whether federal or state must and should be prosecuted in the state and conviction sustained,” he said . (NAN)

UK PM Keir Starmer resigns

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday after less than two years in office, in a term characterised by policy U-turns and deep public unpopularity.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said as he choked up in an emotional speech outside 10 Downing Street.

Starmer said the process of picking a new leader for the centre-left party would be launched in July, and he would remain as prime minister until his successor is chosen, to be in place before parliament returns from the summer recess in September.

Starmer’s main rival, veteran politician Andy Burnham, is due to be sworn in as a member of parliament on Monday after winning a crucial special election on Thursday, allowing him to return to parliament and clearing his path to run for party leader.

“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” Starmer added.

Until the weekend, Starmer had insisted he was going to fight on and remain as prime minister as he fought off challenges and calls to step down.

He has clung to that position for months after multiple scandals and high-profile resignations that piled the pressure on him and his Labour Party.

But Britain is now set to get its seventh prime minister in a decade.

Starmer’s widely anticipated announcement comes a day before the 10-year anniversary of the Brexit referendum, which triggered the UK’s exit from the European Union and an unprecedented churn of prime ministers.

Starmer has been credited with reshaping Labour into an election-winning party, which clinched a decisive victory in 2024, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

But his term was derailed by missteps ranging from benefit cuts to criticism over defence spending plans.

He was nearly ousted in March over his ill-fated decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, a known associate of the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as the UK’s ambassador to Washington.

He has also struggled to fight off the rapid rise of the far-right, anti-immigration Reform UK party — which defeated Labour in local elections in May, further weakening Starmer’s position.

“I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support, knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago,” Starmer said in his resignation speech.

…Describes Asogwa as people’s champion

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has congratulated the winner and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday by-election for Enugu North Senatorial District, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, describing the landslide victory as an affirmation of APC’s overwhelming acceptance and dominance in the state’s politics.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Sunday, declared APC’s Asogwa winner of the senatorial seat formerly won in 2023 by Labour Party Senator Okey Ezea, who died after an illness in November 2025.

The district covers Nsukka, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, and Udenu Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The Returning Officer, Professor Christian Ezeibe, who announced the result in the early hours of Sunday at the INEC office in the LGA, said Asogwa polled a total of 162,360 votes to defeat his closest rival, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 9,299 votes.

Reacting, Mbah described it as a “statement victory,” noting that the people of the senatorial district had not only made the best choice for quality representation, but had also demonstrated total alignment with the APC.

“On behalf of the Government and good people of Enugu State, I congratulate Chief Ikeje Asogwa on this resounding victory.

“It is a statement and landmark victory both for us as an administration and for the APC as a party.

“If anybody was in doubt, the landslide victory proves, beyond rhetoric, that APC has now emerged as the unquestionable dominant political force across the length and breadth of our state. Our people are fully aligned.

“It is also a vote of confidence in Chief Ikeje Asogwa, a people’s champion, who has distinguished himself in the service of his people and the state.

“There is no doubt that his presence at the centre will strengthen state-federal government partnership and the inflow of dividends of democracy,” he stated.
