Guest dies during Lagos birthday celebration, host held

A woman, Salisu Aishat, and seven others have been arrested in connection with the death of a yet-to-be-identified man in the Ijora Badia area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that Aishat was celebrating her birthday when she invited some guests to join her in the felicitation on Olayemi Street, Ijora Badia.

Our correspondent gathered that people were busy having fun during the celebration when the victim was suddenly found lying unconscious on the floor where the event was taking place.

In a bid to ascertain his condition, it was learnt that people moved closer to investigate what had happened to him and while assessing the victim, a wound was seen on his head, suggesting that something sinister had happened to him.

Speaking with our correspondent, a source who does not want his name mentioned in print for fear of victimisation said the development threw people who attended the party into confusion.

The source added that a fight broke out during the party and there was a possibility that the victim was injured during the fight.

The source said, “There was a party on Olayemi Street, Ijora Badia, and a fight broke out during the celebration. Suddenly, the man was found lying down on the ground and when people moved closer to him, they discovered he had died and a wound was on his head.

“The case was reported at the Ijora Badia Division and when policemen got to the scene and did their investigation, they arrested the celebrant who organised the party and some other persons.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted, said the incident happened around 9.10 pm on April 16, 2024, and that it was a concerned member of the community who reported the case to the police.

He added, “Immediately, the DPO led his patrol team to the scene and the celebrant, Salisu Aishat, and seven others were arrested. A wound was discovered on the head of the corpse.

“The corpse was evacuated and deposited in the Mainland Hospital morgue, Yaba, for preservation and autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.” (PUNCH)

An armed robbery suspect, simply identified by his nickname, Bob Jay fell into an open well on Friday night after he and other gang members raided student’s hostel in Unicross, Okuku campus.

The robbers, according to a student of the school who gave her name as Regina, attacked students in their hostel at about 12 midnight and carted away laptops, phones and money and after the robbery, one of the hoodlums fell into an open well while trying to escape with their loot.

“They were many that came around 12 midnight. They robbed all the students in the Okuku hostel. They stabbed one student, broke the head of another with a stick before escaping with phones, laptops and other valuables,” She told Vanguard on phone.

She said the well was used by students to fetch water to bathe and wash clothes and has no cover.

“Nobody knew that one of the robbers fell into the well until dawn when students went to fetch water and saw the man inside dead. They raised alarm and the community people came and took him out and was identified as one of the robbers and some people said his name is Bob Jay from Mbube, a neigbouring village”

She said the police were alerted and they came and took the body away.

She said no other gang members identified yet since the robbers phone fished out of his picket is blur.

Popular activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju has asked Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State to hand over his predecessor, Yahaya Bello to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for trial.

Adeyanju made the call while describing Ododo as an impunity-loving governor.

Posting on Facebook, Adeyanju wrote: “Ododo, the impunity-loving governor of Kogi State should hand over Yahaya Bello to the EFCC to face trial for all his corrupt acts.”

Bello has been on the run since EFCC initiated a fraud case of N80.2 billion allegedly committed while he was still governor of Kogi State.

He went into hiding after operatives of the anti-graft agency attempted to arrest him from his residence in Abuja.

During the raid by EFCC, Ododo had stormed Bello’s residence and whisked him out of the house.

Following its inability to arrest him, EFCC had placed him on the wanted list.

Amid the saga with the EFCC, Bello had prayed an Abuja Federal High Court to transfer his case to Kogi State for trial.

But Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court dismissed Bello’s application seeking to transfer his case to Kogi State.

Justice Tsoho upheld the argument of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that the case should remain in Abuja.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Ododo is hiding Bello at the Kogi State Government House.

Residents of the Sabo area in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, were gripped with fear on Sunday, July 14, when an abandoned building, allegedly used by hoodlums, collapsed.

Five people were reportedly trapped inside when the building collapsed around 7:30 am.

It was learned that the uncompleted, abandoned storey building had been used by hoodlums as an abode before its collapse.

A source known as Tunde explained that the building was a den for cultists, hoodlums, and other bad actors, and that security operatives had raided it several times before its collapse on Sunday morning.

He said: “As I am talking to you, security operatives with rescue teams have arrived the scene. They have brought crain machine to the scene, they rescued three people from the rumbles.”

The spokesperson of the Nigerian Security Civil Defense Corps(NSCDC), Osun State Command, Kehinde Adeleke confirmed the collapse.

According to her, “Subsequent to our earlier report dated 10 June 2024 in which we reported on an uncompleted building used as residence by hoodlums by AUD primary school, Sabo Elegun.

“The building we reported was an eyesore and we recommended raiding by task force and the environmental body to the building is sanitised. The said building collapsed at about 07:30 hrs today Sunday 14th July 2024 entrapping 5 people.

“Two people have been rescued so far while the remaining three are entrapped under the decking that requires the use of a Crain.

“While we await the crane, people are doing all they can within the physical human capacity to break the decking and connected rods. The LGA chairman and his team were around and they have gone to see how the Crain can be brought down. On ground are the SSG who just arrived , NSCDC, Police commissioner of police and the team, OSEMA, and other government dignitaries.”
