Presidential Election: Obi leads Atiku, Tinubu, Kwankwaso in fresh survey
The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has been placed ahead of Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Bola Tinubu of the APC in a recently conducted survey carried out by Market Trends International (MTI) on all presidential candidates in the 2023 election. Also below Peter Obi is Rabiu Kwankwaso of the ANPP.
In a statement by the agency’s Executive Director, Victor Ebhomenye, the opinion survey conducted nationally in Nigeria, saw the former Anambra State governor having the highest favourable rating to be the next president with 44% of the respondents indicating they will vote for the LP candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
The MTI boss said this has come as a surprise to Nigerians because the Labour party and Peter Obi were completely absent in Nigerian presidential scene as at December 2021.
“Peter Obi has picked up pace in the race since he declared interest to run with the Labour Party as the party’s presidential candidate at its national convention and presidential primary in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, on Monday, 30th of May after other aspirants like former presidential adviser, Professor Pat Utomi; Faduri Joseph and Olubusola Emmanuel-Tella, stepped down.
“With Mr Obi’s emergence, the party may receive boosts to achieve lasting alliance talks with the New Nigeria Peoples Party- NNPP (this alliance is said to have collapsed at the moment); Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); Allied Peoples Movement (APM); National Rescue Movement (NRM); Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), among others before the February 2023 presidential race.

“The proposed alliance has halted the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its main opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), from dominating the upcoming elections.
“The PDP was initially seen as the most popular party to win the 2023 presidential election as at December 2021, with 52% of respondents indicating PDP to win were elections to be held in December 2021. When asked whom they will vote for, 28% of respondents leaned towards voting for the PDP.
“However, findings show that 45% of respondents were undecided and did not know which party they would lean towards voting for as at December 2021,” Mr Ebhomenye disclosed.
He further stated that “ever since the loss of the party’s presidential ticket in May 2022 and being overlooked as the running mate to the flagbearer, Alh. Atiku Abubakar, the executive Governor of Rivers State, Gov, Wike and four other PDP governors (popularly known as the G5 Governors) have constituted themselves into an opposition within the PDP.
“It is believed that these G5 governors (Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ngwuanyi and Nyesom Wike) discretely withdrew their support for Atiku Abubakar and this could be one factor to explain the drastic fall in support for the PDP. This has also contributed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Peter Obi gaining more grounds in the upcoming presidential election race.
“When asked to advise the incoming president on challenges to tackle immediately he resumes office, Nigerians advised the incoming president to make Insecurity (46%), Collapsed Economy (20%), and Unemployment (18%) his top priority. Insecurity in Nigeria is a recurring phenomenon that threatens our well-being.
“The south-west is plagued by a surge in cybercrime, armed robbery, kidnapping, domestic crime, extrajudicial killings, herder-farmer conflicts, ritual killings, and banditry. The south-east is a haven for ritual killings, commercial crime, secessionist agitation, kidnapping, herder-farmer clashes, attacks by unknown gunmen, and banditry.
“The south-south remains threatened by militancy, kidnapping, and environmental agitation. The north-east has been subject to a humanitarian crisis lasting over a decade, caused by the Boko Haram insurgency and the Islamic State in the West Africa Province. Meanwhile, the north-west is enmeshed in illegal mining, ethno-religious killings, and banditry.”
The MTI through Mr Ebhomenye was of the opinion that generally, the Nigerian state is teetering on the brink of collapse with no clearly defined strategy to deal with the effects of the global headwinds.
“Inflation levels are at a record high, largely caused by cost-push factors. The unemployment rate has remained above 33%, and government debts are at the highest levels the country has ever witnessed, but more worrisome is that we are using almost 100% of our revenue in debt servicing.
“According to the IMF, Nigeria is projected to record Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 3.2% in 2022, and 3.0% in 2023, both representing 0.2% points lower than the 3.4% and 3.2% respectively projected in the July World Economic Outlook.
“Insecurity (46%), Collapsed Economy (20%) and Unemployment (18%) should be the Top Priority for the incoming president,” the MTI opined.

Again, armed thugs disrupt Peter Obi’s visit to Benue
A visit by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, to Benue State on Tuesday was disrupted by suspected thugs who confronted his convoy along Gboko Road in Makurdi.
Mr Obi was reportedly on a scheduled visit to the state when his convoy was stopped near the Air Force Base.
The incident, according to his campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, occurred shortly after the convoy arrived in Benue.
Ms Umoh, in a post on X accompanied by videos, alleged that suspected thugs blocked the road.
“We have just arrived in Benue State, where alleged sponsored thugs have blocked Boko Road by the Air Force Base, attempting to prevent Peter Obi from gaining access into the state,” she said.

In one of the tending videos Mr Obi’s convoy could be seen turning back as a group of men carrying what appeared to be clubs, stones, sticks and other objects pursued the vehicles.
The men also appeared to throw objects towards the convoy as it attempted to leave the area.
Another video showed a detachment of police officers positioned between the convoy and the group.
The suspected thugs, however, appeared to breach the police line and continued pursuing the vehicles.
The convoy eventually turned back and left the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not issued an official statement on the incident and could not be reached for comment.
NDC alleges government involvement
In another video obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, Terhemba Shija, the NDC governorship candidate in Benue, alleged that the suspected thugs were sponsored by the state government.
The allegation had not been independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
Addressing supporters after the incident, Mr Obi expressed displeasure over the development and said he had decided to return after being prevented from proceeding into the state.
He said he was visiting Benue to show solidarity with communities affected by the Yelewata killings in 2025.
“They killed, hundreds of people lost their life. I started to come back. And someone told me that they decided to lock the road and make sure I don’t go,” Mr Obi said.
He described the situation as unacceptable and called on Nigerians to recognise that the country belonged to everyone.
“We must have a country. People are killed every day in Benue. People want to show solidarity and comfort. People want to show that they are with them. I came here all the way this morning,” he said.
Mr Obi also criticised the use of political supporters and others to prevent people from moving freely, saying such actions would not help the country address insecurity and poverty.
April 2025: Alia stopped Obi’s planned IDP visit
The latest incident is the second reported occasion on which Mr Obi’s planned visit to Benue has been disrupted.
On 14 April 2025, Governor Hyacinth Alia warned Mr Obi against making what he described as an unscheduled visit to the state.
Mr Obi was expected to visit internally displaced persons in Benue on that day.
In a statement titled “Notice Regarding Unscheduled Visit to Benue State,” Mr Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, said anyone planning to visit IDP camps in the state was required to obtain approval from the Benue State Emergency Management Agency.
The governor also said he could not guarantee the safety of anyone visiting the state without his knowledge or clearance.
“For anyone considering a visit to Benue State without the governor’s knowledge, it is imperative to reconsider such plans, as the safety and security of individuals in this regard cannot be guaranteed,” the statement said.
The governor further warned against visits that could result in what he called “political assemblies” without prior approval.
April 24, 2025: Alia explains why Obi was stopped
On 24 April 2025, Mr Alia explained his decision during an interview on TVC’s Beyond The Headlines.
The governor denied that the decision was politically motivated and said his primary concern was the safety of IDPs and adherence to protocols.
“I can never politicise this issue. I am the one bearing the brunt and the pains of the IDPs in my state. It’s my duty to protect them. I am the one on the ground, feeling the same sorrow and pain as the IDPs,” Mr Alia said.
He said high-profile visitors to the state should inform the state government and follow established protocols.
“If you are coming into someone’s state as a very high-profile personality, there are protocols. Your party should know, and I, as the sitting governor, should also be informed,” he said.
Mr Alia also said he needed to know the purpose of Mr Obi’s visit and what assistance he intended to provide to the displaced persons.
He dismissed claims that the decision was intended to prevent humanitarian assistance to IDPs, saying genuine humanitarian efforts were welcome but had to comply with security requirements.
Obi accused government of politicising visit
Mr Obi subsequently took to X to complain about the treatment of his planned visit, accusing the government of politicising a humanitarian intervention.
The disagreement between Mr Obi and Mr Alia therefore became an earlier point of tension over the former governor’s visits to Benue and the state government’s insistence that such visits be coordinated with relevant authorities.
Tuesday’s incident comes amid renewed attacks
The latest confrontation also comes amid renewed violence in several parts of Benue.
Communities across parts of Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Ohimini, Okpokwu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Gwer-West, Gwer-East, Katsina-Ala, Logo and Ukum local government areas have recently experienced attacks, resulting in deaths, injuries, displacement and destruction of property.
Mr Obi’s reported visit came against that backdrop, with the NDC candidate saying his intention was to express solidarity with communities affected by the violence.
The latest incident has now raised fresh questions about political tolerance and the treatment of opposition politicians as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
While Mr Obi’s team has alleged that sponsored thugs and security personnel prevented him from proceeding into Makurdi, the allegations against the state government and security agencies had not been independently established as of the time of filing.

Peter Obi can rescue Nigeria, POMR replies Datti-Baba Ahmed
The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has rejected the suggestion that former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, cannot rescue Nigeria, arguing that his record in public office provides evidence of his capacity to address the country’s challenges.
POMR made its position known in a statement signed by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, on Monday, in response to recent comments by former Labour Party presidential running mate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who reportedly expressed doubts about the ability of any individual, including Obi, to rescue Nigeria from its systemic challenges.
Zekeri said Datti-Baba Ahmed’s position was understandable, given the severity of Nigeria’s problems, but argued that it should not be interpreted as evidence that Obi lacks the capacity to lead reforms.
According to him, Nigeria’s challenges are the result of years of mismanagement, corruption, waste and poor leadership, making it necessary for voters to distinguish between political promises and demonstrated capacity.
He said Obi’s administration in Anambra State offered evidence of his approach to governance, particularly in the areas of fiscal discipline, education, healthcare, infrastructure and human development.

“Peter Obi does not approach Nigeria’s challenges as an experiment. His record in Anambra provides evidence of what he can do with limited resources when public office is treated as a responsibility rather than an opportunity for personal enrichment,” he said.
POMR maintained that rescuing Nigeria would not be the work of one individual acting alone, but argued that the country needed a leader capable of assembling competent Nigerians and building institutions capable of delivering sustainable development.
Zekeri said an Obi-led administration would focus on strengthening institutions, tackling corruption, reducing waste, investing in production and restoring public confidence in government.
“The question is whether Nigeria can elect a leader with the character, competence, prudence and courage to begin the rescue. We believe Peter Obi can, and will,” he said.
He added that Obi should not be presented as a messiah but as a leader whose previous record demonstrated an understanding that public resources constitute a public trust.

2027: I’m ready to die protecting my vote — Obi
Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared that he is ready to lose his life while protecting his votes in the 2027 election.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Thursday, Obi charged Nigerians to prevent a repeat of the “irregularities” witnessed during the 2023 general election.
In 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to upload election results electronically due to the alleged failure of IReV.
Critics had accused the commission of hiding under the alleged failure of IReV to rig the election against the opposition.
Obi, who ran under Labour Party, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who was candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had rejected the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as winner of the election and headed to the court.

But Tinubu’s election victory was upheld by the court.
Speaking at the event tagged: “Obi Talks Nigeria”, the NDC Presidential Candidate said those plotting to manipulate the election would fail in their mission.

He urged his supporters to go all out and exercise their franchise on election day, saying no one would intimidate them or prevent their votes from counting.
“Nobody will intimidate us again at the polling booth. If you get to any polling booth today, the highest number of officials you see is five. The average number of voters is 40 to 50. There is no way five people will intimidate 50 people.”
“This time all of us will rescue our country. Somebody said, ‘We are ready to die.’ Let me tell you, I’m ready to die too.
“We will make sure we have coordination to ensure that such intimidation does not arise. Yes, they will try to manipulate the IReV. But let me tell you, it will not be easy this time,” he said.
“There will be so many IReVs this time. If there is a network glitch, we will give them another one that has no glitch,” he said.
“By allowing them to continue, that glitch will glitch our lives. That is what we are suffering today,” Obi said.
On his part, NDC Vice Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, appealed to voters to avoid past mistakes of not choosing competent leaders with the capacity to address the country’s challenges.
He said despite the number of states that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) currently controls, the party will still lose the next election.
“I believe that Nigerians must not make mistakes again. This is the time to get it right. And anything to the contrary, I believe people, if they make a mistake, certainly people will regret making that mistake. Because it will be too costly for the people and the country.”
“Jonathan was the president, the sitting president lost the election. I’ve given you an example, especially those who think because they have over 30 governors, they cannot lose the election. That was a very big mistake,” he said. (Daily Trust)
