Ndume blames FG, Senate for Trump’s designation of Nigeria as ‘country of particular concern’
Former Chief Whip and current Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has blamed the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration and the Senate for the tagging of Nigeria by the United States President, Donald Trump, as ‘Country of Particular Concern.’
Ndume, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, accused both the executive and legislative arms of complacency, saying their failure to proactively engage the United States government on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria led to the development.
The senator recalled that he had earlier sponsored a motion in the Senate on “Christian genocide” in the country. The motion, he said, led to resolutions mandating the Nigerian government to engage the U.S. with verified facts and figures.
Daily Trust reports that President Trump, on Friday, announced the designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ over alleged persecution of Christians.
Trump made the announcement via a post on his Truth Social platform, which was also shared on the official White House X handle.

“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” President Trump wrote.
But the Nigerian government swiftly rejected the claims, insisting that Trump’s assessment did not reflect the true situation of the country.
However, Senator Ndume accused the Tinubu administration and the Senate of treating the allegation raised by US lawmaker, Riley Moore, with complacency, prior to Trump’s declaration, and urged the federal government to take urgent steps to engage the US government with facts and figures on the activities of terrorists’ organisation which he noted were blind to faith.
“I have alerted the government. I even moved a motion. Nigeria is a sovereign state, it isn’t about what the United States can do to us, but about the misconception and the ripple effects of classifying us as a country of concern.
“We should engage the American government by presenting facts and figures. By engaging the US government, we should demand that they hear the other side of the story from the Nigerian government and the Muslim community. Muslims have been killed too. The genocide isn’t against Christians but Nigerians generally,” he said. (Weekend Trust)

Gov Mbah urges Nigerians to make ‘japa’ a choice, not an escape
…As 2,101 Corps members sworn-in in Enugu State
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has charged Nigerians with collectively building a nation that earns the patriotism of young people, while also making migration a choice, not an escape route.
Mbah spoke in Awgu during the swearing-in ceremony for the 2026 Batch C Stream of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to Enugu State.
He stressed that Nigeria’s extraordinary youth population could only become a demographic dividend if the nation creates the education, skills, jobs, enterprise and institutions that enable young Nigerians to convert their energy and talent into productivity and prosperity, hence the essence of the NYSC beyond experiencing other parts of Nigeria.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah (middle), poses for a photo with members of the National Youth Service Corps Batch ‘C’ 2026 during their swearing-in ceremony at Awgu, Enugu State, Friday.
“We often ask young Nigerians to be patriotic. But let us ask ourselves a more difficult question: How do we earn the patriotism of our young people if they feel excluded from their country’s promise?

“Patriotism must be cultivated by creating a country in which young people can see a future for themselves.
“We must provide quality education; create an enabling environment for enterprise; expand opportunities; make our institutions work.
“We must build a country where merit is rewarded, hard work has meaning and dreams do not have to be exported before they can become reality,” he said.

Mbah, however, urged the youth to never forget the demands patriotism makes of them, both in good and difficult times.
“Patriotism also demands something from you. It demands that, even when the country is imperfect, you refuse to give up on its possibilities; that you criticise what is wrong without abandoning what can be made right; that you do not merely ask: ‘What can Nigeria give me?’
“but also ask: ‘What can I give Nigeria?’
“Together, we can build a country where ‘japa’ is a choice, not an escape; where our young people can travel the world without feeling compelled to abandon home.

“If you are called upon to teach, teach as though Nigeria’s future were sitting before you – because it is. And when you encounter the difficulties, do not simply ask: ‘When will Nigeria change?’ Ask the more powerful question: ‘What can I do to change Nigeria?’ That is the question of citizenship,” he emphasised.
He assured them of their welfare, safety and comfort in Enugu State, reminding them that Enugu is a state rich in cosmopolitan history, and where every citizen could attain any height he or she is capable of.
“The Government of Enugu State will continue to work with the NYSC authorities to provide a conducive, secure and supportive environment for your service. We will pay particular attention to your welfare, safety and the conditions under which you discharge your responsibilities across the state.
“But, importantly, note that you are not strangers in Enugu. Our history offers remarkable testimony. When Enugu was elevated to municipal status in 1952, Mallam Umaru Altine, a Fulani man from Sokoto, became its first Mayor.

“It tells us that in Enugu, where you come from need not determine how far you can go; that belonging is not always about birthplace; that citizenship is also about contribution,” he assured them.
Speaking earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Oluwakemi Awolola, on behalf of the Director-General of the agency, Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, said a total of 2,101 corps members had been registered under Batch C, and thanked Governor Mbah for improved welfare of Corps members and for making their environment conducive and safe.
“I am pleased to report that a total of 2,101 prospective corps members, comprising 983 males and 1,118 females, have been successfully registered for the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream/Orientation Course in Enugu State. Their level of cooperation, enthusiasm, and willingness to participate in camp activities have been commendable.
“We remain particularly grateful for your administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, security, and general wellbeing of Corps members.
“Of particular significance is the ongoing comprehensive intervention and overhaul of facilities at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Agwu, as well as improved welfare support and allowances, which you have graciously promised serving corps members,” she stated.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Enugu State, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, and the Chairman of Awgu, the host LGA, Hon. Uchenna Okolo, assured the corps members that the state and LGAs would continue to work collaboratively with the NYSC authorities to ensure they have the best service experience in Enugu State.
The new corps members were sworn in by the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Afojulu Ozoemena, represented by Justice Anthony Onovo.
The event featured a parade by the Batch ‘C’ intakes.
Mbah also used the occasion to tour the NYSC Orientation Camp, Awgu, where he inspected completed and ongoing projects by his administration to make the Camp conducive for the corps members.

How I killed my girlfriend after HIV dispute — Suspect
A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has told the Enugu State Police Command how he allegedly killed his 27-year-old girlfriend, Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu, following an argument over HIV.
The suspect gave the account during an interview with the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, which was shared on his social media platforms on Friday.
The police identified the deceased as a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, who recently completed her National Youth Service Corps programme.
According to Emmanuel, the incident occurred around midnight on September 19, 2026, after he told Ugwu that he could cure people living with hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis.
He said Ugwu then accused him of infecting her with HIV, leading to an argument and physical confrontation.

“She held the pestle and started hitting me but I had to withdraw it from her. I hit her which caused her to collapse,” he said.
The suspect said he subsequently used a machete to inflict injuries on her wrist, head and neck.
Emmanuel said he then used a machete on her after she collapsed.
“Yeah, I chopped off the wrist,” he said when asked what he did with the machete.
He also admitted cutting her on the head and neck.
“I had to just close up the toilets and close the master’s bedroom and locked it up,” he said.
He said he wrapped her body in a black nylon bag and moved it to the toilet, where it remained until neighbours broke into the house after noticing an offensive odour.
“I was weeping, broken-hearted,” he said, adding that he had tried to communicate with a neighbour but was unable to get help.
Emmanuel also admitted damaging Ugwu’s Samsung phone because he feared it could be used to trace him.
He said her iPhone had already been switched off before the incident after she complained that it was faulty.
The suspect said he met Ugwu on Facebook in 2023 and resumed their relationship after she returned to Enugu in 2026.
He said he had intended to marry her and had spoken with her mother before the incident.
Asked about his actions, Emmanuel said he was not fully aware of himself at the time and attributed this to possibly being under the influence of a substance.
“This thing is not actually what I did clearly or intentionally. I wasn’t fully aware of myself first,” he said.
He pleaded for forgiveness and mercy, saying he had been praying to God over the incident.
“I’ve been praying to God for forgiveness and, like, for the fact that this wasn’t actually clearly pure intentional act from my angle, and I’ve been pleading for the government to temper justice with mercy,” he said.
The police said the deceased’s parents and siblings had been identified and interviewed by the Commissioner of Police, while the suspect had also been interviewed.
The command said the Commissioner had directed that the investigation be concluded and the suspect charged to court.
Police urged members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted people of their whereabouts when going out.
The Enugu State Police Command had on September 23 announced Emmanuel’s arrest in connection with the incident.
Police said neighbours discovered the decomposing body after an offensive odour came from the apartment, where the remains had allegedly been wrapped in nylon and kept in a toilet.
The command said the incident occurred on September 19 and that the suspect was arrested after being rescued from an angry mob.

NDC fumes as police cancel Obi-Kwankwaso march in Akwa Ibom
Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has expressed anger over the police cancellation of a two-million-man march organised by “Obidient Movement” scheduled for the presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in Uyo.
It was gathered that the state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, had issued a press statement warning all political parties to stop any rally or street march on Independence Day in the state, stating a lack of enough manpower to control such a crowd.
A statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Uyo, warned political parties, groups or associations to halt any planned procession in the city during the Independence Day festivities.
“The Akwa Ibom State police command wishes to inform all political parties, political groups, associations and other concerned stakeholders that, following credible intelligence available to the command indicating plans by some individuals to exploit scheduled political activities to cause disturbances and threaten public peace, and in the overriding interest of public safety and security, all approvals earlier granted for political rallies, meetings, processions and other related public political activities scheduled to hold on Thursday, 1st October 2026, anywhere within Akwa Ibom State are hereby directed to be rescheduled,” the police statement read.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the State Director of Obidient Movement, Dr Benjamin Smith, expressed annoyance, accusing the police of frustrating the planned two-million-man march for Obi/Kwankwaso in the state.

Smith said the order was an afterthought, as the police commissioner had earlier granted their request to hold the rally in Uyo.
He said the Obidient Movement had spent over N20m to mobilise their supporters across the 31 local government areas of the state and wondered why the police would just wake up and cancel the event without minding the cost implications to the organisers.
He added that the party honoured an invitation by the police on September 29, including members of the planning committee for the proposed Akwa Ibom two-million-man solidarity march for Obi-Kwankwaso 2027.
Smith, who was accompanied by the officers of the Obidient Movement and NDC chieftains, estimated the loss following the cancellation of the rally to the tune of N20m and insisted that the movement and NDC would not accept further cancellation in the future.
He encouraged supporters to be law-abiding as another scheduled rally would be communicated to them.
He accused the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, of being responsible for the postponement and reminded them that they were once an opposition party but were given a level playing field to campaign and win elections in the past.
