Shaibu: I feel deeply hurt, betrayed by Obaseki supporting Ighodalo
The deputy governor of Edo state, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has disclosed that he is deeply hurt that Governor Godwin Obaseki is supporting a Lagos-based lawyer, Asue Ighodalo, an indigene of Edo Central Senatorial District, whom he described as an outsider, instead of him.
Shaibu, a leading governorship aspirant on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 21 election, accused Obaseki, who hails from Benin Kingdom in Edo South Senatorial District, and withheld the allocations to his office for over six months, of betrayal.
Edo deputy governor, who is an indigene of Edo North Senatorial District, insisted that he was not fighting Obaseki over his decision to support Ighodalo, but Edo governor was the one fighting him.
He stressed that Obaseki declared a full-scale war against him for daring to exercise his democratic right in seeking the ticket of PDP, with the intention to succeed him on November 12, 2024.
Shaibu spoke recently as a guest on a national television’s live programme, which was monitored in Benin.
He accused Obaseki of playing the role of a political godfather in the southsouth state, while noting that Edo governor and him fought against godfatherism after agreeing that such a situation should never again be experienced in Edo.
He said: “The shared focus of Governor Obaseki and I remains serving the people of Edo State, and dismantling the influence of godfathers in Edo politics.
“I staked my long-term relationship with Senator Adams Oshiomhole to fight oppression, and back Governor Obaseki’s aspiration.”
Shaibu also expressed displeasure that in spite of his 100 percent loyalty to Obaseki, his dedication to duties, and hard work, while standing through thick and thin with Edo governor, he decided to work against his this year’s governorship aspiration.
He said: “This is the same governor (Obaseki) that issued me many commendation letters, writing that I am the best deputy governor any governor will wish to have, because of my efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
“Anyone who says I betrayed Edo governor is not correct. We all agreed as a group to fight godfathers. Even Governor Obaseki pledged to fight godfatherism in Edo State, and said he should be dealt with, if he turns around and attempts to play the role of a godfather.
“Since I hate oppression, I staked my relationship with Oshiomhole. I lost about 20 per cent of my political capital in Edo North Senatorial District to support Obaseki as the deputy governor. Through my friends and others, I supported the second term bid of Edo governor in 2020, with my structure, all my vehicles, and finances. For us to get the ticket of PDP, I contributed financially.”
Edo deputy governor also expressed optimism of emerging the standard bearer of PDP this year, in spite of the war declared against him by Obaseki.

Former Edo NLC chairman slumps, dies after encounter with police
Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, has reportedly died after a confrontation with police officers at a roadblock in the Upper Sokponba area of Benin City.
In response, civil society groups have issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the police to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the incident.
Eboigbodin, who was driving with his wife, was reportedly stopped on Monday by the police.
According to Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Eboigbodin’s wife stated that the officers demanded the vehicle’s papers, which were up to date.
They raised concerns about a discrepancy between the car’s glass engraving and its plate number.
Despite offering an explanation, the police allegedly seized his documents, ordered his arrest, and called for a tow truck to impound the vehicle.
The situation quickly escalated, and Eboigbodin reportedly collapsed at the scene.
His wife and bystanders rushed him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Witnesses claim the officers fled without offering any help.
The Edo State Police Command has denied the allegations of misconduct.
Police spokesperson SP Moses Yamu stated that the account provided by civil rights groups does not match the version of events given by Eboigbodin’s wife to the authorities.
Civil society organizations, including ANEEJ and the Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), have called for justice for Eboigbodin.
Rev. Ugolor remembered him as a dedicated leader, former NLC Chairman in Edo State, National Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), and a pioneer in various civil society movements.
Comrade Omobude Agho, Coordinator-General of EDOSCO, expressed shock at the police’s actions, stressing that Eboigbodin was a respected and well-known figure in the state.
The groups have given the police 48 hours to identify the officers involved and provide a full explanation of the incident.
They have also emphasized the need for reform within the Nigerian Police Force and greater accountability for officers’ conduct.
Eboigbodin’s death has sparked widespread anger and demands for justice from labor unions, civil society organizations, and the public.
