Senator Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo State, has urged youths in the state to shun methamphetamine, otherwise known as ‘mkpurummiri’ and other forms of illicit drugs.

The governor gave the advice during an enlightenment on drugs organised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in collaboration with Ikukuoma Sports Development Foundation, at Ezinihitte Mbaise council area of Imo, on Sunday.

Uzodinma, represented by his Special Adviser on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief EzechukwuObonna, described the use of illicit drugs as the bane of productivity among the youths.

He further advised the youths to rather embrace the acquisition of digital skills, as well as agricultural practices for survival.

“Don’t destroy your future. My motive for establishing the Bureau of Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring is to make Imo a drug-free state,” he said.

Speaking, NDLEA’s Deputy State Commander, Operations and Training, Mr Lamuwa Shehu, described the abuse of drugs as a global problem, noting that youths who engaged in illicit drugs neither lived healthy nor became useful.

“About 280 million people use drugs worldwide; while 15 million persons abuse drugs in Nigeria, 6 million persons are victims who are in dire need of help,” he said.

The founder, Ikukuoma Sports Development Foundation, Chief Summers Nwokie said that the program was intended to disabuse the minds of youths from illicit drug use.

25-year-old man kills girlfriend in Akwa Ibom
A 25-year-old man identified simply as Elisha has reportedly killed his girlfriend in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The reason for the dastardly act, which, according to the report, occurred during the rushing hours of Tuesday, could not be ascertained at press time.

The incident happened in a residential compound near the popular Beaulah International Nursery and Primary Schools on Atiku Abubakar Way in the metropolis.

According to neighbours, the tragedy, which occurred at about 7:00 AM, took the residents by surprise as some were rushing to work and dropping off children and wards at schools, and a crowd of sympathisers thronged the scene, blocking the double lanes and impeding the free flow of traffic.

When a reporter visited the scene, it was observed that the corpse of the victim and the suspected killer had already been taken to the police headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, while armed policemen were seen trying to calm down the situation.

A source who pleaded anonymity said the unfortunate incident happened around 7 AM on Tuesday when the suspect, who lives in the compound, came home with his girlfriend, said to be a nurse.

She explained that they got into the room, and a few minutes later, they overheard him beating her as both of them were struggling.

According to her, “An aged woman in the compound, on hearing the shouts, went and advised the boy to stop the beating, but he refused.

“Since we couldn’t do anything, we called the father, who lived away from the area, to come and control the situation.

During the trial, prosecuting counsel, Olusegun Olaotan, told the court that while the victim’s mother was bathing her seven-year-old daughter, she observed that something was wrong with her private part.

Upon persistent questioning, Olaotan revealed the minor told her mother how she was sexually abused by the convict.

“While giving her evidence in court, the second prosecution witness, who is the victim, said that the defendant used to pull aside her pants before inserting his finger into her vagina.

“Evidence of the third prosecution witness (medical doctor) corroborates that of the second prosecution witness. She testified that in the course of examining the victim, she discovered that the hymen was not intact. It was opened by 2cm,” Olaotan submitted.

Olaotan further said the victim mentioned the name of the defendant as the only person who repeatedly inserted his finger into her private part.

The prosecuting counsel urged the court to go ahead and punish the defendant for his misdeeds as evidence before the court is quite overwhelming and weighty enough to hold him guilty of rape and should be convicted accordingly.

In his judgement, Justice Abiodun Akinyemi held that the prosecuting counsel has established the case of rape against the accused and thereafter sentenced him to life imprisonment.
