Enugu PDP supporters storm INEC office, protest delay in declaring Mbah winner

The candidate of the PDP, Barr. Peter Mbah is currently leading his closest challenger, Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party with 16747 votes.

According to the results collated from the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu State, the PDP polled a total of 174,289 votes while Labour Party had 157,542 votes.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, however said that proceeding will commence again by 8:30am on Monday to allow the commission, attend to the complaints raised by both PDP and Labour Party.

But the supporters of the PDP are insisting that INEC isn’t a tribunal and as such, should declare Mbah winner and accusing the umpire of trying to scuttle the process.

The protesters are agitating and saying that the INEC State Collation/Returning Officer and Resident Electoral Commission (REC) have no power to cancel results at this stage the outcomes had been formally collated and received at the INEC Headquarters in Enugu.

The PDP supporters added that the INEC State Returning Officer should announce the result as collated and any party not satisfied with it should go to the Election Petition Tribunal and challenge the result as the INEC National Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood pronounced during the collation of Presidential Election on February 25.

The PDP accused Chief Nnia Nwodo, Prof. Barth Nnaji, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo who are rooting for Chijioke Edeoga of Labour Party (LP) of interference in the final announcement of the Enugu State governorship result won by Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of the PDP, warning that any attempt to disrupt the announcement of the result may lead to anarchy.

On its part, the Labour Party has insisted that the result from Nkanu East should be cancelled on account of alleged malpractices. Supporters of the party arrived the Enugu INEC office earlier with placards chanting ‘No BVAS, No Result’ demanding that justice be done.

The Labour Party and its governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chijioke Edeoga have petitioned INEC against the results from the Local Government area, saying BVAS was not used in election conducted at Nkanu East council.

Edeoga, the candidate, is demanding the rejection of the results. He said elections there were not conducted on line with the 2022 Electoral Act as BVAS was not used but the PDP dismissed his claim as the ranting of a loser.

However, the LP protesters disappeared with their placards from the INEC premises when thousands of PDP supporters stormed the environment with several placards and cultural troupes singing victory songs, dancing and bemoaning the delay in declaring their candidate winner of the governorship poll.

A rights activist, Kennedy Iyere, who spoke on the development, told newsmen that the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu during the collation of the presidential election results, went ahead to return a winner and asked those dissatisfied to go to court.

Iyere wondered why INEC should use Enugu as a guinea pig to experiment what has never been done anywhere in the country, adding that the discrepancies in question here can’t be compared to what happened in the presidential election and despite the protest, Mahmood declared a winner.

He went further to reveal that some powerful persons in Enugu State like former minister, Bath Nnaji, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo are pushing INEC not to declare the result that its collation has been completed since Sunday night.

Other supporters of Mbah that spoke to journalists, accused INEC of bias and asked them to go ahead and declare their candidate winner since he met all the requirements of the law and has a strong lead of over 16,000 votes.

Meanwhile, the State INEC Resident Commissioner, Dr Chukwu, told newsmen on Monday to be patient as he was awaiting directive from the commission’s headquarters at Abuja on the final declaration of Enugu election result.

The senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, has warned against the activities of members of the Accord Party in Ilesha ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

Fadahunsi, who spoke in Yoruba while addressing supporters in Ilesha, said there would be trouble if members of the Accord Party were seen in the area, urging his supporters to come out and vote during the election.He also called on those present to record his statement, while making a remark that suggested his supporters would confront Accord Party members if they encountered them before the election.“If we hear of Accord Party members coming to Ilesha, there will be trouble. We will all come out and vote. Please record me. We are here, and between now and the election, if we see anyone from the Accord Party, we will kill them,” he said.The statement comes amid heightened political activities in Osun State ahead of the governorship election, with political parties intensifying campaigns and mobilisation of supporters across the state.Fadahunsi is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and currently represents Osun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

Fadahunsi clarifies comments

However, following intense criticisms of the senator’s threat, Fadahunsi, made a clarification on the intention behind his now-viral ‘Kill Accord’ comment currently circulating in a video on social media.

In the video, Fadahunsi was seen speaking in Yoruba and heard accusing Accord Party members of attacking members of the All Progressives Congress, as he urged the gathering to attack Accord Party supporters in Ilesa.

He was also seen daring those present to record his remarks and share them on social media, while reportedly addressing APC supporters in Ilesa ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election.

In a statement by his media office in the state capital on Tuesday, titled ‘Kill Osun Accord with Votes, Not Violence, Senator Fadahunsi Tells APC,’ the senator said his viral comment was “a call on supporters to overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party at the ballot box through lawful, peaceful and democratic means during the August 15 governorship election.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Senator’s statement was purely political and metaphorical,” the statement added.

It noted that the comment didn’t portray the lawmaker as an advocate of violence against any member of the public or political party.

Fadahunsi urged the APC supporters to maintain law and order over the course of the election, as he called on security operatives to allow voters to exercise their constitutional rights.

Accord Party governorship candidate in the Osun State governorship election, Ademola Adeleke, has declared that he is not intimidated by the alleged support of the Federal Government and some state governors for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

Adeleke described himself as a “bulldozer”, saying he was prepared to face what he described as federal might and the influence of governors backing his opponent.

The governor stated this on Tuesday during the Arise Townhall Meeting, where he also said he was not afraid of the governors supporting the APC candidate.

“I am a bulldozer. I am talk and do. I am not afraid of federal might and governors backing the APC candidate. If they like, they should bring all the governors,” Adeleke said.

He said the governors were his friends and expressed confidence that their presence in Osun would not determine the outcome of the election.

“Those governors are my friends. I am a civilised administrator. They won’t vote; they can only come and dance, and after the election, we will meet,” he said.

Adeleke also rejected allegations that his administration had militarised Osun State, saying he lacked the authority to deploy the armed forces.

“I did not militarise Osun. I have no such capacity. I am not the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” he said.

The governor’s comments came amid heightened political activities ahead of the Osun governorship election, with the major political parties intensifying their campaigns and mobilisation across the state.

Ahead the 2027 Presidential election, the leadership of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) the umbrella socio-cultural organization in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) strongly refutes and rejects the recent statements made by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Minister of Works David Umahi, and Senate Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwebonyi claiming that the South-East electorate is fully united behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

President General of the Igbo ethnic body, Nze Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe stated in a press Statement on Monday emphatically stated that the three of them are neither spokespersons of Igbos in the FCT. He added that, “these three are merely being sent out to talk for Tinubu against the interest of Igbos. The South-East considers the Tinubu administration as a failed administration and for this reason will not vote Tinubu.”

The ICA President noted for the avoidance of doubt, that it wishes to set the record straight for the public and the political establishment that the mandate to speak for the Igbo People neither lie in the hand of Governor Hope Uzodimma, Minister David Umahi, nor Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi who under Tinubu arrogate to themselves as the spokespersons for the Igbo ethnic group.

Nze Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, further agued that elected political appointees and ruling-party actors do not hold a mandate to declare a political consensus on behalf of millions of Igbo citizens.

The statement reads further, “These endorsements represent the personal political preservation strategies of a few office holders seeking to retain favor with the presidency. They do not reflect the true political stance, socio-economic realities, or grassroots sentiment of the South-East region.

“The grassroots population across the South-East considers the current federal administration to have failed on key economic and administrative metrics.

“The assertion that President Tinubu will sweep all five South-East states in 2027 is completely detached from the prevailing conditions on the ground.”

Meanwhile, The Igbo Community Association (ICA) FCT urges public officials from the South-East to focus on their constitutional duties, governance, and the immediate economic needs of their constituents, rather than attempting to trade away the political sovereignty of the Igbo electorate for personal leverage.
